I thought original air boxes with K&N panel filters were always a better option that induction kits...

Not such an easy option on an S50 converted E30 especially if the car has ABS, as the pump gets in the way of the S50 airbox. It is possible to move the ABS pump, but its a lot of work.

Here's my heatshield attempt before I finished it...

The filter was large and sat pretty much on top of the ABS pump. The heatshield curved around the filter, right down to the top of the chassis rail and slotted into a couple of the handy holes. The top of the heatshield was held in place by the retaining clips for the plastic headlight trim (that was removed so the filter got its fresh air).
I did eventually enclose the rear of the filter, but don't have any pics of it finished.

It was just a cheap and cheerful heatshield made from some bent/shaped sheet of stainless steel, but it did the job and definitely made a decent induction noise winkeye
I may have a sound clip on my old hard drive if I can find it :D

K&N make something called a powerblanket.
That would do the trick.
