Stands to reason that Technicians will be trained on more modern stuff, as this will
be the Dealers bread and butter.
At the end of the day, we are talking about cars that are fast approaching 30 years of production, so techs that are up on E30's may well be getting a bit thin on the ground now.
Barry may know different.
Bang on!

Out of the 4 BMW dealers i have worked for there has been at least two people that worked on them when new, the current dealer i work for has 5! techs that have worked for BMW long enough to have been PDI'ing E21's!
A lot BMW techs and other staff for that matter tend to stay with the brand for long time if not for the whole duration of the career within the motor trade.
But as has been said, its all down to the staff as to how well your car will be looked after and that goes for independents as well, not just main dealers!

Thats because any main dealer service on a modern car basically comprises a sh1tload of "checking" and virtually no actual "doing"
A main dealer "service" appears now to be a box ticking excersize that you pay through the nose for used to find/make up other ( chargeable ) work - £100+ a pop for a brake fluid or coolant change for example
Great when someone else is paying or if you're rich/stupid ( delete as appropriate ) enough to buy something still within warranty. An utter ripoff for normal people running their own cars from net disposable after-tax income.
Even if I had the shekels I wouldnt take my E30 to a main dealer - the Techs are clueless about anything that cant be plugged in and would probably shat themselves when presented with an engine bay full of metal rather than plastic parts

Rob, you should know better than to post the above drivel!
That is NOT an accurate portrayal of what goes on and is typical of the stereo type of the main dealer technician "plugs it into a computer" blah blah bollo cks.
Its far from a box ticking exercise to "make up" chargeable work!
A service/inspection isnt just some basic exercise of changing the oil and some filters and kick it out the door.
Correct maintenance includes inspecting for any issues that may be developing and caught in time before they create other more serious issues.
Regular brake fluid changes are a must as if not changed not only reduces braking performance but also can cause things like brake calipers to seize.
Coolant changes are a must as well, how many M20 heads have corroded and cracked over the years through lack of this?
People need to realise that cars need money spending on them on a regular basis to keep them is good shape and if you cant do it yourself then it costs in labour.
