Why did your E30 have to go Bodyshop ?

I can see Barry reading this thread with interest.

Certainly when my e30 goes into Vines for it's MOT it gets very positive comments.

You have to understand, they are main dealers. They are there to make money and of course they will try to upsell. Or is it upselling? Or following the correct service schedule and therefore you are compromising by not doing it?

No they won't chip rust off a brake line and grease it. They'll want to replace it with the correct part and that will incur labour.

But then for every BMW dealer I've heard of trying to pull peoples strides down, I've heard of probably 10 back street bodger types trying it on.

So called specialists? Theres 2 near me, one near Guildford and the other near Horsham. Put one in for a service and I've yet to see much of a saving over a main dealer. They seem to deal on the fact the customer "believes" he's geting a cheaper deal. "oh that was expensive, imaging what it would have been at BMW's!" well actually, in my experience, not a lot more mate!

We've all heard of the specialist in the Ashdown Forest area. I've seen some downright RUDE invoices from them that I know full well Vines would have possibly been cheaper!
Munich Legends have new owners now as you know. I went there for a PPI and get the paint depth measured. I met with Dan (who surprisingly knew my name) and Stuart. Stuart took the time to explain the findings and even a little chat over about E46 M3s and showed me around the blue M1 they had which was owned by Coccetto. They offered more of a personal service than a typical BMW Dealer at least when speaking to you.

BMW Dealers you are placing your confidence in the brand, the stamp, the training the techs do, and obviously you hope you get a proper good tech :-)
That saying that I presume Dealers don't take short cuts with what needs doing, you have the parts and labour warranty of 2 years.

Most importantly of all you have "comeback" and apart from BMW Berry Chiswick who are generally useless at calling you back normally you have to leave a message and wait for the service advisor to call back .... They will keep you updated and will return your calls .... :-)

During the time it takes to properly service an E30 they could do about 5 E90 inspection 1's.

I won't mention your 318i bad boy that the dealer fitterz done a cambelt on and it threw its foooked fanbelt off on the way home from collecting it ! Hard shoulder FTW :(
It was the water pump that failed the day after - the shagged, cracked belts were replaced by the AA man as he replaced the pump.

The two specialists I know run rings around the local dealers. The hourly rate is less than half and they are vastly more flexible - would a main dealer fit a good used gearbox?

Decided against the main dealer and found a specialist that used to be a dealership back in the day. It was a confidence boost that they had an E30 M3 and a 2002 Alpina in the showroom. They're not cheap at E100 p/h but it's about E25 p/h less than the dealer and the 2 old(ish) boys seemed enthousiastic.

I wouldn't expect them to. A second hand box is a compromise as is using a specialist. You pay your money and takes your choc ice.

All I'm saying is that there is good and bad in both.

Chris Plummer in Aldershot is a specialist. Ex Dealer Tech cut his teeth on e28's and e30's I understand. His stamp is in my convertiles history and the car was a goodun from the off. Saying to me he made his mark on the car and it was looked after well. Ive since recommended him and only had positive responses.

ML may have new owners but the rep the name had? The new owners have a mountain to climb.

The two specialists I spoke of are seriously no cheaper than a dealer. Mate took a 525 e34 into one of them for an oil service a few years ago and came out with a bill of £120. My 523 e39 (at the time) went into vines at the same and had the same treatment. Cost? £140 iirc and i got a dealer stamp to boot. He then tried the other one and they right royally tried it on. Upselling is not the word. The only additional job they were asked to d was to tighten the checkstrap bolt on the drivers door. And they bloody forgot it! Hinges and bonnet latches not lubricated and they didn't clean it before collection either. Hopeless.

As stated. theres good and bad in both.

I think ML have done some good work in emphasising the new ownership.
New branding, new investment, new blood, revitalise and motivate the staff etc as far as I know.
Would be unfair to dismiss them based on previous owners.

If anything you should confront the former owners. Both of these independents have regular articles and columns on the BMW Car Club mag.
If there is a serious case for these allegations maybe there should be lawsuit against perpetrator.
One garage I wouldn't trust is West3 Autos from Bollo Lane. Fucking terrible.

he's an ex master tech

thing is to be fair in some way to dealers, theres plenty of guys in their late 30's early 40's who trained worked on e30's but like pete it luck of the draw if you get them.

I treated it and found the price from BMW competitive, it was it safe hands and all the parts inc screws and fittings were all genuine.

Yeah I told em that it wasn't an insurance job and it was my pride and joy, they warmed to the fact I wanted it doing properly and I was forking out of my own pocket instead of the big ins companies.

I lost count of the extras I wanted but it had 2 new wings which it didn't need but I saw the body guy rubbing em down and I said would it be better with new wings, he laughed and I said get 2 wings then.

Because I treated it.

The wings were fine but started to show slight bubbles on the inside - pics to follow - and instead of farting about rubbing em down and I decided on new wings.

No, it went to a place I've used before in Badhoeverdorp that used to be a dealership. They're meticulous but not cheap and annoyingly not open on Saturday so it's difficult to get to them.

I wouldn't touch a BMW Main Stealer with a bargepole. I was waiting outside a main dealer one day and watched a so called "Technician" scrape a small hole in the ice of an e46 winscreen then start it up, drive it straight on to a ramp, turn it off and drain the oil, i guess for a service. Now i maybe wrong here but i have always thoroughly warmed the engine prior to draining oil so it runs out quickly bringing all the C*ap with it. I realise i may just be being picky here but you would imagine that at the labour rate these monkeys charge every job should be done to a top standard. I guess it doesn't bother them because it will be anm "old car"and long out of BMW's care before this lax attitude has any consequences.

Stands to reason that Technicians will be trained on more modern stuff, as this will
be the Dealers bread and butter.
At the end of the day, we are talking about cars that are fast approaching 30 years of production, so techs that are up on E30's may well be getting a bit thin on the ground now.

Barry may know different.
Bang on!
Grrrmachine wrote:It's very rare that a BMW dealer will have someone on site that remembers working on E30s, so if you're looking for the personal touch then there's no reason a dealer would be any better than some other mechanic.
Out of the 4 BMW dealers i have worked for there has been at least two people that worked on them when new, the current dealer i work for has 5! techs that have worked for BMW long enough to have been PDI'ing E21's!

A lot BMW techs and other staff for that matter tend to stay with the brand for long time if not for the whole duration of the career within the motor trade.

But as has been said, its all down to the staff as to how well your car will be looked after and that goes for independents as well, not just main dealers!
capri_rob wrote:

Thats because any main dealer service on a modern car basically comprises a sh1tload of "checking" and virtually no actual "doing" :x

A main dealer "service" appears now to be a box ticking excersize that you pay through the nose for used to find/make up other ( chargeable ) work - £100+ a pop for a brake fluid or coolant change for example

Great when someone else is paying or if you're rich/stupid ( delete as appropriate ) enough to buy something still within warranty. An utter ripoff for normal people running their own cars from net disposable after-tax income.

Even if I had the shekels I wouldnt take my E30 to a main dealer - the Techs are clueless about anything that cant be plugged in and would probably shat themselves when presented with an engine bay full of metal rather than plastic parts
Rob, you should know better than to post the above drivel!

That is NOT an accurate portrayal of what goes on and is typical of the stereo type of the main dealer technician "plugs it into a computer" blah blah bollo cks.

Its far from a box ticking exercise to "make up" chargeable work!

A service/inspection isnt just some basic exercise of changing the oil and some filters and kick it out the door.

Correct maintenance includes inspecting for any issues that may be developing and caught in time before they create other more serious issues.

Regular brake fluid changes are a must as if not changed not only reduces braking performance but also can cause things like brake calipers to seize.

Coolant changes are a must as well, how many M20 heads have corroded and cracked over the years through lack of this?

People need to realise that cars need money spending on them on a regular basis to keep them is good shape and if you cant do it yourself then it costs in labour.

Its called care of duty.

If you sent your car into a main dealer for a service and 10 miles down the road after you picked it up a brake hose failed and you crashed because of it you would then kick off saying the garage should have spotted it and told you!

Yes of course its a way of generating work for a garage but they (mostly) dont make it up.

Most of the cars (especially E30's) that come into my own workshop end up leaving with a long list of issues that need addressing.

In the late 90's when I had my best 325i I used Rydale Sutton Coldfield for an inspection 2 on their 4+ scheme - cost me an arm and a leg BUT I got the impression they cared about what they were doing, the car was fully valeted, the radiator cap recall was done FOC whilst it was in which I didnt even know about until I picked it up - they even left a tin of expensive sweets in the car with a customer service questionnaire making sure I was happy - there were a couple of advisory points mentioned but no high pressure to get the issues dealt with there and then.
Yes it was expensive but I felt I had been treated very fairly and the full valet was a bonus I wasnt expecting.

In contrast when I used Sytners a couple of years ago for the E36 oil service they could not have cared less - they knocked it out in less than half an hour and when I said no to the big relentless sales pitch they couldnt get me out of the door quick enough. It left a very bad taste in my mouth and I havent been back since.

I dont intend to use a main dealer for servicing again. I'm sure there are good ones out there but its just too expensive a punt each time trying to find them.

Welcome back anyways Baz :D

Synters don't seem to have a good customer service reputation. I heard some bad tales from people enquiring about their cars or servicing etc.

Some people within the dealer have no idea.
I rang up Park Lane yesterday querying why my last visit to the BMW Dealer in May 2013 was not recorded on BMW UK's dealer visit system. The idiot who answered told me because is outside the warranty period which is plain ridiculous because previously when u had MOT, servicing, warranty work or BMW Approved Used Car check. I kept telling him should be recorded but was like speaking to a brick wall. In the end I spoke to his manager who said was a bit strange not to be recorded but suggested there may be a glitch in the "view data" system as maybe doesn't live update automatically and to check in a month.

The call centre staff in BMW Dealers and BMW UK are generally useless in my opinion they are not a good representation of the brand and maybe have no interest which is a shame because plenty of people out there do.
