After years of looking around, found an E30 that i could buy and afford.
Knowing well that it would cost me as much in parts, shipping and customs as the already high cost of the car.

It pains to see so many 'perfectly reasonable' condition E30 being broken, but i guess that is the way it is.

Putting up a few pictures. They are mostly about all the things that have gone wrong (almost everything :)) with the car.

Bought it on 2nd April 2013 and the last few months have been spent poring over various rebuilds, asking questions, and collating as much info as I can cram in a short span of time.

After about 15 days of careful driving, the last 2 months it is on stands awaiting parts.

As I found it, in a dump, literally. Seeing its condition, not surprising.

A few other pics:

Drove it home after closing the deal and getting it registered to my name:

Image

And then to my garage to get it on the ramp for an inspection.

Image

Yes, I checked it after I bought it.

Image

Wrote to BMW India and they referred the query to BMW Germany for manufacturer info, as I wanted to know what all it had left the factory with so that I can put it all back in due course of time.

This is the sheet they emailed:

Took it to Navnit Motors, and it broke down. Push start wouldn't help. We suspect it may be the fuel pump. So it was towed back to the garage, and clicked a few pictures, as I was leaving for Thailand for a short holiday and had convinced the missus to agree on a destination that could also double up as a parts source. She agreed after much misgiving as going from the summer of Mumbai to sweltering Thailand didn't exactly constitute an escape.

Up it went on stands

Image

Hopes up of finding the parts

Image

I knew that language would be a big issue in Bangkok, as the parts shop owners are not conversant with any language other than Thai. Still managed to find 2-3 who spoke a smattering and could help me.

The pictures i had clicked detailed what I wanted:

Image

The plastic surround:
Image

Square eyelet cover: Or whatever it is called.
Image

Flaps: but didn't get any. The right bottom is the mother-load of rust. Fist sized or more.
Image

The under steering cover:
Image

Had a tough time carrying it on the way back along with a used glove box and latch.

What is the aluminum box with the pink mark?

The handle and the electric mirror switch
Image

Original door latches instead of the Hyundai Santro stuff:
Image

Rubber surround for the window, above the door card.

Image

Cracked old gear knob:
Image

As you can see the list is endless.

Front ashtray has a burn mark. Would require advise on how I can repair/restore this.
Image

The rear is broken
Image

These don't work. And the belt has gone slack. Any way to repair the belts?
Image

The Carb as is. Suspected to be a Suzuki carburetor. Discovered that all the E30 Carb car owners in Thailand are running old Honda Accord carbs as they are the 'best'. Or most of them have dumped the M10 for a Nissan 2.5L engine.

Image

And while on it, this is the Suzuki Jimny 410 Air box:
Image

The fuse box cover has warped. Heat?
Image

These don't work. Why am I even writing this?
Image

Thanks to Instagram, these old yellowed frames are in fashion.
Image

The rear view is the same:
Image

The temperature gauge doesn't work, so got a new one. Along with a temperature sensor.
Image

The seller has tampered with the odometer and has clocked it back by 20-30000 miles.

The central locking doesn't work or the fuse is gone, we will check that. Soon.
Image

Electric Antenna is jammed
Image

Image

Radio doesn't work or maybe again a question with the electrics/fuse.
Image

The AC switch is again from either Hyundai or Suzuki. Not sure. Don't care.

The leather surround for the gear knob is cracked/torn. Have got that and a new knob, and the bushing and rubber gaiter.

Took it to the AC shop. 26 years of dirt.
Image

Rusted headlight brackets. And no leaks in the lines.
Image

Discovered that the AC is now 'direct'
Image

And a Mercedes 190E part powers it
Image

Other engine bay close ups:

Image

Image

Image

Notice the battery held in place by the corrugated cardboard piece.

The AC guys hard at work, trying to decode the mysteries:
Image

The expansion valve is so rusted that he said if I touch it, it will break off.
And when I wrote to Pelican parts, the advice is quite detailed and confusing.

Can anyone help me with parts for a AC system changed to R134-A. The compressor is Ok. The expansion valve, the dryer/receiver and the switch need to be changed.

Three shipments have arrived.
Smaller stuff is coming via our forum members HJG-E30 and Hennared323i.
Ebay.co.uk is proving to be a boon. And those things are trickling in as fast as Royal Mail can handle.

Not bad. That looks proper ghetto, that place you bought it from - parked up next to the local drug dealer's blacked-out Benz!

The box with the label on is the ECU (Engine Control Unit). Normally used to control the carb on the M10 engine.

Well, I'm no expert on the M10 models; it may well just control the ignition side of things.

I gather the original Pierburg carb was ECU controlled.

Likelihood is, if someone's fitted a Suzuki carb, then it will have no effect on the carb operation.

Woah, mega ghetto stuff going on there, using all sorts of parts 'just to make it work'!

Certainly an interesting read aha.

Wow, great thread. I admire the way that cars are kept on the road in Asia/Africa when parts are not available they improvise and make their own parts  I know it's ghetto but it's pretty cool at the same time!

OP, I sent you a PM 8)

Speedtouch: Will need info on connecting this ECU to the new Weber carb that i have got. Will appreciate advice on this a little later.

Adambeevers: 'Make it work any how' may be ok for cheaper cars, actually for no car, but can't understand it for this one as it is easier to import parts now. Though maybe the ex-owner(s) may not have appreciated the 316 and couldn't justify the additional expense.

Rav335uk and Duke137: Have replied to PMs. Will keep all posted on how it's going.

Kieran325: Thanks, i need all the courage and encouragement. It's my first project and sometimes it feels like swimming in cold, deep water.

Suededenim: My mechanic was aghast that i was ordering parts from EU. He was confident that the 3-4 old parts shops in central Mumbai, (these guys sell parts for all imported cars for decades.) will have them all, or can get it cheap.

We went there, and all they could dig out from the store room were the Front 45mm Monroe shocks and rear wheel bearings, which I had got from Bangkok already. Nothing else.

For me the irritant is the small stuff, hate to put together things without the correct pins, locks, screws and clamps. The beginning of it all looking a bit off is when non-oem stuff is used to put it together.

Read it twice. Hopefully it will make sense to my mechanic, when I read out the contents to him.

And that means, I will keep my new Weber carb aside till I get it up and running again and then experiment with things that ain't broke.

Thanks.

Forgive my arrogance, but India sounds an extremely difficult place to live if your into actually looking after/maintaining and keeping a vehicle in good condition.

Excited to see this progress however.

Only pre-94 BMWs. Only people bored with life or in Advertising would take up such a foolish project.

The only progress I've made is that I've found names and a few emails of the 12 E30 owners in India. Don't know how it's going to help :)

Two steps forward,

51 mm Sachs shocks were the "It doesn't fit', what?!!! How can that be....oh there are different sizes....crap!" shock after lugging them all the way from Thailand.
Image

Found 45mm Monroe in Mumbai and got them in.
Image

Steering rack repair kit turned out to be for an M40 engined car. My Thai was limited to two words, his English was bad. Another shake of the head from teh garage owner, because he was unhappy that I was importing parts, and feeling confident that we could get everything here. Our visit to Opera House and Lamington Road (an area here where all the parts shops are located) proved him wrong. Just got 2 Monroe shocks and old rear wheel bearings, nothing else.

So local guys used what they could from the bunch of rubber seals and the rest off a proper set.

As a fellow M10 owner, albeit an injection as opposed to carb, I have
nothing but admiration for your doggedness in resourcing parts.
Also loving the Heath Robinson approach to fixing things.

Any help I can give you re obtaining parts, give me a shout and I'll try my best
to help. :thumb:

Haha Thanks for all the encouragement and support.

I wish import of cars was allowed here. And yes, 10 Pound parts are costing 20 Pounds to ship so my CA is not going to be happy later in the year. After all this, I hope it runs.

Have to admit, had to google Heath Robinson to figure what you meant, and why good cars are 'turds' will always remain a mystery to me :? :o:

" turd" can be term of endearment but also can describe a car as a shed, heap, pile of
crap. Very difficult to explain as it depends on what context it is being used.

On any of my turds, it's usually the latter meaning. :)

I know the other meanings :)
It's just the term of endearment that had me foxed.
