Hi,

I'm 'doing my homework' so-to-speak on getting a 325 Sport. The killer I'm facing is insurance.

This will be the first car I've owned/insured. I've driven 1000's of miles in my parents company cars and I've insured a motorbike for the last 5 years, but I've never insured a car in my name, hence no NCB. I've also only had a car licence for just over a year (again, had a bike one for ages) and I have two speeding tickets...well technically I'm back down to 3 points now, but the insurance companies insist on asking 'within the past 5 years'

I'm 21, and a 'professional' (design engineer). So why is it I read about people my age being able to insure 325's when I can only find quotes the wrong side of Ԛ£1400 TPFT?

Am I being unreasonble, is Ԛ£1400 a sensible amount to pay? Just seems a lot when my 900cc bike cost Ԛ£330 to insure and I've done an 11.9s 1/4 mile on it!

Where do you lot insure your cars?

with your age and 'experience' i dont think youll get it much lower than that, especially with the speeding offences and no ncb. 11.9 second quarter mile times tend not to impress insurance companies winkeye

And yet, the guy next to me still won 8O

He did have a 50% power advantage though. Although I used a bit of dramatic licence (lied through me teeth:wink: ) it was actually 11.98.

Insuring fully comp and jacking up the excess may be the way to go.

I was getting quotes around Ԛ£1400 TPO (though for a 316i at 17) and with a large excess I got insured for just over Ԛ£1k.

Large really is large though. On one car it's Ԛ£650 plus a Young Driver Excess of Ԛ£250 (Ԛ£900) and on the other it's Ԛ£1050.

Certainly makes you think twice before you try doing anything silly winkeye

because of the small amount of time you have held a car licence, your age and the type of vehicle, plus the Sp30 on your licence you are not an insurer's wet dream i'm afraid.

Generally you are going to get a better quote from a specialist broker like Adrian Flux, HIC, Greenlight, Direct Choice to name a few, this is because these guys can see around the basic details of 21 year old, licence 12 months, convictions, they can manually run quotes and take into account your experience of high speed machinery which muppets in call centres in India cannot when you speak to the bigger direct writers like NU Direct etc. Footman James, Lancaster, Performance Direct are a few more brokers who specialise in "non-standard" risks. It is just patience on the phone. I would avoid doing quotes on the net as they will just quote amounts that will make your dick schrivel :-x

But how much?

More or less than Ԛ£1400?

Looking at a 318iS myself actually. Originally considerd a 320i Touring but found a 318iS is faster and cheaper. Go figure...

Insurance is not supposed to be understood, its all about how loss is distributed through society.

They assess how much of risk your circumstances are, try shopping around but a word of warning, 325i has always been considered i high rated car which is why a few companies put age restricitions on it

its not a good idea to bump your excess up because even if its not your fault, you will have to pay that amount of money first before the company pays and it can take time to recover your outlay. This seems to defeat the purpose of having insurance if your forking out for relatively small claims.

I am 27 (10yrs licence) have a 325i, i have 7yrs NCB live in london (high risk post code) my insurance went up from Ԛ£707 last year to Ԛ£740 fully comp protected.
When too much loss is happening in your area you will have to pay for it as i am!

elephant is the only online company to give me a reasonable quote. Im also young with no NCB.

Though they fuck you from behind if you have an accident apparantly.

hi there ppl
i see that your trying to get insurance on a 325isport!
i am 19 with 2yrs driving exp and 2 yr no claims which to be fair aint a lot!
now i used to own a vauxhall nova gsi (135bhp 140mph+ 1600cc) which to be fair is quick but has nothing on the sport! i was paying way way over Ԛ£2000 to insure this due to the fact that it was a gsi and the risk of it been stolen, boy racers owning them, and the fact that there is well at the time 167 genunie gsi's left in the uk! now had it have been a gte,and as mine was a h reg had the same engine as the gte it would have cost me Ԛ£1400 now thats a diffrence and a half ay? but any way ive been looking at insurance too and been only 19 its verry hard to afford insurance on a sport ,thats is you can get it at all!
but i have fallen in love with one on autotrader tonight and i looking in to getting a loan as we speek!
i went all diffrent insurers and they either wounld not insure me as i was under 21or as the only company that said they would insure me quote silly money! i was quoted Ԛ£3604 to insure it third party fire and theft!
THEN i found loysd tsb car insurance i put my exact details in and found they would insure me ona 325I SPORT BMW for just over Ԛ£1400.
which when u consider that ive been driving 2 yrs wit 2 yrs no claims and am only 19 thats the fucking nut especally when you c how much i ve been paying for my old GSI!
SO THRY THEM!
