I'm having problems with my knob, it may not be helped by the way I'm using it but also it shouldn't be doing what it is doing (at least I don't think it should).

Right, enough of the dodgy innuendoes. :D

Depending on how I have my hand on the gear shift, changing up 2nd - 3rd and 3rd - 4th I can remove the top, it is usually when I'm doing slightly aggressive shifts.
When I stripped things down it was really hard to remove the shifter knob, like, I had to put he-man strength into it. Now though it comes off with shifting which really isn't good.

I know one of the answers is "don't shift aggressively" but the main thing is, it shouldn't be coming off so easily.

Any ideas as to what I can do to sort this? I could replace it as that should have a tighter connection to the stick but I'd rather not spend when it is only an occasional issue.

Hahahahaha

I just mean when pressing on, quick shifting, rather than lazy old man taking about 30mins to change gear. :P

and for Rav...

It is quite annoying when my knob comes off the shaft as it usually then spins on the shaft which makes my knob a bit useless. winkeye

Take the knob off the lever, look inside, and report back what you see.

Looks fine to be honest. The pegs that wedge into the slot on the stick are intact, one bit did look slightly worn so I guess they are worn...tempted to use it as an excuse to buy a short weighted replacement from BMW.

Sounds like it's been invaded too many times, and the hole has been worn out.

Sounds like the wife!

Buy a cheap replacement on here as a test case. If ok then you know you need a Knob replacement.

The car came with a dogleg //M knob which took heman strength to remove. The one fitted now was in the spares car and didn't take as much effort to remove so does make sense that it could be worn.

It locks into place fine, just pops off that little bit too easily. I've had worse on other cars where even when fitted properly they wobbled a bit due to being properly worn.

I'll keep an eye out for a replacement on here...not overly fussed about replacing just yet as I can just drive sensibly and it doesn't happen. :P

Mine had a proper dodgy M-tech one, which was coming off no matter how easy/hard you shifted.

No need to mention that the inner mounting bits were all broken, so obviously it wouldn't stay in place for too long.

I replaced it with an E36 regular black knob and now it's dead on. If you want to take it out, you have to use Mr Olympia muscle...

That said, your knob is definitely knackered :D

Maybe try wrapping a bit of tape around your shaft. Making the knob a nice tight fit.

Better say that again mate just to be sure :)
How do you pronounce 'either'? I say 'either', but some say 'either'. Either is correct.

I was tempted to cram some blutac onto the end, then ram the knob home, to essetially fill any worn gaps and make it a more snug fit. it is ok for the moment though and I figure blutac would just be a pain, might try some electrical tape on it though, more sensible option.
