please do Jonnie, not sure when it will be running yet. As I've had to bite the bullet and order some more bits from Alpina
which take a good 2 weeks IF the part is in stock. Crazy system they have going on
Some bits of note as I've had a couple of eves after work at it

Clutch can be bolted on, new disc doesn't say which side is gearbox which is handy. It does only fit one way round though!
The pressure plate disc is a dark colour? hinting at its power to suppress the mighty torque? Normally they are shiney

Trevor kindly repainted theses bits and the oil filter housing cap

Inlet built back up and ready to bolt back on engine, injectors have been refurbed. Their flow rate was not far off normal but the spray pattern was beginning to suffer. New hoses for the various bits hanging off it.

Doing the sump gasket is a must at this stage. Its all very clean looking. Didn't take much to clean the sump up in the parts washer

I've been giving the mill a bit of a clean up while its out.

Current mess, its orgainised really!

If I said these 10 new nuts where £46 delivered and that's the cheapest deal I could find!
For the turbo area. To replace lost, missing, damaged ones.
I've bit the bullet and ordered some various studs from alpine for a lot of monies! So that's going to hold me up from getting turbos back on just yet.
Still plenty to do!

I'm not happy with the cam cover if I'm honest. It fought me all the way. I've said to Si, bolt it on, see how it looks and if we need to go again, I'll strip it right back and start again.
Getting close now this car. gonna be epic!

Seems steep although inconel is a proper bastar* to machine - can you send me the length, diameter and thread pitch - I have a couple of old contacts in the oil industryDemlotcrew wrote:Just had a price back for the 718 Inconel Studs, you are looking at £25 each with a 3 week build time.
I wonder if Winx can get a better price?

I got a free afternoon today which seems to be rare at the moment!

they're imaginative when it comes to the engine numbers! Car no. 445 will have engine number...... makes sense to be fair

Heads stamped up from alpina, shows its the original head looking at the casting date

Shiney inlet back on, the lower nuts you need to be special to get to them, no room

Rocker on, I bought new domed nuts, but they aren't very shiney like the originals were. Any ideas where I can get better ones?

This is the breather pipe off the rocker, its all alpina stylee here, I ordered the pipe to replace this previous effort. It was £18 pound though

Heres the rear turbo all built up and ready to bolt on

Front turbo bare

Heres the gasket that was missing from both turbos from when I stripped it down. Who ever was here last time didn't bother with them and it was blowing before, so they must be needed!

bolted on

oil return pipe (to block) on

All built up, oil feed and coolant pipes bolted on. I can't go any further as i'm waiting for studs from Alpina now to replace some bent/damaged ones.
Once they arrive I can bolt these two badboys back on

New centre bearing mount, the bearing itself is fine and also as said before a unique item, you can buy a bearing in this size but its got smaller bearings! Alpina only

Heres the prop now ready to go back on when the time is right. This is also unique to the bi-turbo also. Luckily the one knackered part was the bmw one! £11 cheapest fix on the car so far

this is the gearbox input oil seal. Which on intial looking appeared alpina only, as they list their own part number for it. Its NLA. But the e34 M5 one isn't, after checking the sizes they're the same. So same as the getrag 280 gearbox, phew

Been leaking some time I would guess

A good clean out,
Once I have the seal I can bolt the box back onto the engine ready for the re install
Light is appearing!!

I bought these stainless steel dome ones off E-bay for my 325iSE, which were quite good, although it did say they could be polished if you wanted a mirror finish, so I guess you could do that to your nuts if you felt so inclined.Simon13 wrote:[/URL]

This thread demonstrates perfectly that expensive cars bought for beer money still need loadsofmoney spent to keep them running properly.
All credit to Simon for biting a very costly bullet to get this more door back into top condition.

Good point...Demlotcrew wrote:What do you class as beer money?
Perhaps a car that cost £50k+ when new, bought today for less than £5k....
So 10% or so of starting price.
Thinking about this,I guess that all E30's drop into this catagory!

If Simon bought that B10 for five thousand pounds, he did well! I never realised they were so cheap.

it cost more than £5000 to buy! It was a bargain in terms of current market values. Which have dipped into banger money. Which probably explains the high survival rate i'd say as only tools with money can buy one in some respect. They've not gone the way of say, e36 m3, e46 m3 to some extent and the e39 m5.

I would also guess these were much more than fifty grand new, maybe closer to seventy five?

Base price new was 146,800DM, which equates to £64,216.

So on that basis, using my 10% of purchase price formula, puts this into 'beer money' at about £6.5k....Speedtouch wrote:Base price new was 146,800DM, which equates to £64,216.
To my way of thinking, that's more Bourdoux money than beer money!
Much respect, though,to Simon for taking this on and bringing it back to how it should be.

I think Simons has to be closer to seventy as its a nice spec with electric seats too if im not mistaken?
I dont think Simon paid six and a half for it, why do you think today these are only worth 10% of their price when new?

My home here in Lincoln cost me £3000 in 1975,or some time before you became even a twinkle in your dad's eye....London area prices would be somewhat higher,I guess.Simon13 wrote:holy moly, that's an epic amount I never knew that! in 1992what kind of house would that of bought in recession hit England forum old timers? Old cars always throw a swerve ball at some point,I've spent the day in Norfolk working with an expert on my current project(a 1952 wooden Broads cruiser)and yes,you are right,we stripped 20' of planking off the underside to reveal further, well hidden, rot in the structural timber....at least my issues here are almost cheap compared to an Alpina clutch!

my gran/grandad bought their 3 bed semi house brand new in Farnborough in 1960 for £3000 malco!
gran bless her is still living there.
I reckon it would buy a lot, I seem to remember a mate buying a flat in the late late 90's for 60k in Bracknell.

in terms of options i'd of thought the buffalo leather with alpine rhoms in the seats would of been extra. The recaro seats were standard on them in cloth. You had to option bmw's sport seats which a few have like on of petes old ones.
electric blind an extra? along with the door blinds? heated seats at a guess and the sunroof
Anyhow look what turned up for a pretty penny this week

3 studs, £97 please

2 smaller studs were for the front manifold

Front turbo built up ready to go

Rear turbo back on.....

front one on, so i'm really cooking on gas now. The gearbox and starter can be bolted on and the whole lot re fitted into the car!
Bolting the turbos and pipework back on was fiddley with it hanging in the air. I'm not sure how I unbolted them on my driveway before on a frosty afternoon/evening!
I stopped there as I couldn't remember how all the heat shields went and the pipework!
This weekend should see some real progress!

Ouch, thats horrific for 3 small bits of metal. But a necessary evil. Hope you get this all back together before your kid arrives otherwise it will take years to get road worthy again.
