I have an advisory on the MOT for a cracked tyre - I'm about to go to the ring, so I will be replacing the tyres on that axle to be on the safe side.

Am I best to have the new tyres on the rear or the front? The existing tyres are nothing special, but they have plenty of tread.

Thanks

I always thought it would be better to have them on the drive wheels, but from reading on here others opinions, it's better to have them on the front, as apparently worn fronts have quite a big effect on handling and feel in comparison to rears

i don't think it makes the slightest bit of difference, just remember that whatever axel you put them on they may take quite a few miles to scrub in, so don't drive away from having them fitted like you stole it.

lots of cars have different size front and rear tyres making it impossible to always put the new ones on the back :D
cheers,

+1 when i worked for a main stealer we were actually advised to fit new tyres to the back. Their reasoning at the time was that understeer was less frightening and more controlable to the majority of drivers than oversteer.

We always thought it was a bit daft really but the instructions came straight from the manufacturer.

This is the reason I've understood it to be as well, which makes sense. The general population don't know/aren't able to control things like oversteer so most cars are prone to understeer. Fitting tyres to keep the oversteer at bay is quite logical really.

I know how to handle my cars, but even so I'd still rather have the newer, grippier rubber on the back as it kicking out when you're not expecting it isn't fun (fun when you provoke and do it on purpose mind).

Personally, in a RWD car I put new tyres on the front so I have better steering. If the back lets go you can always use opposite lock.

When I had a Fiat Coupe (FWD) I always put the new tyres on the back because there's not a lot you can do if a FWD car lets go at the back.

ymmv :)

Best advise I can give here would be to fit some decent tyres then worry about what axel you are going put them on to

Enjoy the ring :D

That is the main thing...and ensure they are on the same axel, not the same side. :D

also check the requirement for driving abroad as i heard that in some countries all 4 tyres on a car must be the same make and model and as per manufacturer recommended. Anything other than that will mean a fine or your car being inpounded. Don't know if this is right or wrong.

Another note, on nice smooth tarmac a tyre with deep tread grooves will not grip as much as a tyre with shallow tread grooves winkeye

So my spare set of alloys with bald tyres should grip really well... :P

Certainly is - opposite lock and nail the throttle :D Counter-intuitive and scary when there's scenery approaching, but have faith and it'll do the job!

All very well in theory, but Fiat Coupés were well known for not responding favourably to that sort of thing!

It's definitely a requirement in France, but I wouldn't expect any problems with a GB registered car.
Don't know if it applies in Germany or not, but they do have a six year limit on the age of your tyres.

I always fit new tyres to the front, let them wear to around 3mm,then put them aside for rear axle use.
I find that worn front tyres on E30 will tramline and aquaplane, not really an issue if the worn tyres are on the rear!

Snag is,I have a pile of 'rear axle only' wheels/tyres,and no spare wheels to have new tyres fitted to!
