Pete and Andys advice is priceless. I have ordered fuel filter, oil filter, looked into shocks ( the suspension is harrowing ) its fine just veeeeery soft. I have oil there. I need to do something with the clutch, slave cylinder i think is fucked. But this weekend I will try the washers and see about replacing the cogGert_8 wrote:Just go with your plan, Verd. All you're after is a good running car, which is cheap to insure. Get the lump sorted, in the order Pete has advised.

The problem with injection is you're set at a certain performance, which you can far exceed with different piston, cylinder head and carb variations, and is why the earlier 2 litres make so much more power, and why the Americans love them. Obviously though cost becomes a major factor in all of it, so to get 170hp, it's far cheaper to just stick an M20b25 in it.Grrrmachine wrote:I never did the Wiki M10 Chain guide because I was told it's 10x easier just to swap in a new lump if the chain on the old one lets go.
Wondering if it's worth doing that or converting to fuel injection at the same time to liven the engine up a bit.

Ignore the engine swap / modding 'experts' whose expertise is spending your money . LEAVE IT STANDARD !verde wrote:Theres nout wrong with the engine, its just been sat for a bit and needs serviced and tightened. I did consider a swap but remember insurance costs. I was slated and ripped into for putting an M20 into my 316, now the same folks are suggesting M52s and M42s. As for more power - 4 branch and GSXR1100 bike carbs can be done for like 300 poundsGrrrmachine wrote:I never did the Wiki M10 Chain guide because I was told it's 10x easier just to swap in a new lump if the chain on the old one lets go.

With the rocker cover off the condition of the chain and top sprocket should be easy to check.
If you buy a new chain with a a split link (most come like this) you can join it to the old one and wind it around. No need for sumps or bonnets off or any of that b0llox.
Unless the bottom sprocket is really foooked , leave well alone, changing it will add a whole load of aggro and pain to a relatively straight forward job.

The timing marks are pretty obvious and as long as you are careful and mark everything, you can not really go wrong.
PS When/ if undoing the cam sprocket, be sure to stick a lump of rag in the front cover to prevent any bolts etc falling into the sump......

What I would also do with the cam cover off: buy two new copper washers, remove the banjo bolt, twist the spray bar through 180 degrees with grips and drill the oil holes out with a 1mm drill. This will put a lot more oil on the cam and extend it's life, and can quieten down a noisy one. Wash the banjo and the thread in the cylinder head with carb/brake cleaner and tighten it to be moderately tight. Not sure what the torque figure is.

The couple of m20 heads I have rebuilt I have replaced the spray bar.
Is it the m30 spray bar some people crimp in the middle to raise the squirt pressure?

There's no need - flow is all you need and the M30 oil pump is powerful enough to flow a lot of oil. Crimping the middle doesn't hurt I guess.

What do you mean twist through 180 degrees? I bought a new one to put on mine, which sounds pretty awful sometimes. Still waiting on a cam sprocket, although the noise does seem to be coming from the middle of the rocker cover.Andyboy wrote:What I would also do with the cam cover off: buy two new copper washers, remove the banjo bolt, twist the spray bar through 180 degrees with grips and drill the oil holes out with a 1mm drill. Andy means, leave one end attached, the end nearest the Radiator, then move the unattached end of the spraybar round , again towards the radiator,so that it is now clear off the cylinder head, then drill your holes.capnmchl wrote:What do you mean twist through 180 degrees? OK bring forth the abuse
Idle - very quiet - quieter than the broken back box i had
1-2.5k mere burble to small drone
3.5k begins to rip
4k+ roaring pretty wildly - lift off the gas and you get over run and popping

Todays task - Finally find that fucking air leak and get the juddering fixed.
do the timing
work done thus far
oil + filter and fuel filter changed, jets cleaned, engine addetive run through, distributor cap looked at, plugs checked, tappets checked, carb tweeked a bit, rear silencer " fixed "
New bushes being ordered, timing to be done, new dizzy and HT leads, new shocks and springs are a priority

I'd lose the 316 badge, not only for a cleaner look, but also so that parking wardens don't know what it is if you get nabbed.
