and what- youd happily pay/gamble a load of cash and a grand or more shipping fees to have a car turn on up on a few pics an description ?

fly out to where you want to import one from, buy it, ship/drive it back yourself

I have a really nice '87 cab in diamond black with beige leather, A/C and lots of other goodies. It is currently at my summer house in Lagos but for 5k I can import it to Brighton :)

I think you might be trying to apply the wrong rules to buying an E30, which is why you can't find what you want.

You're looking at a car with over 20 years on the clock now. Something that's got every single service stamp (FSH) going back to 1992 will NOT be selling for 5.5k.

Neither does "low miles" really mean anything on a car with two decades' worth of tarmac behind it. A car with 150k on the clock is far more likely to have had the serious stuff replaced (suspension inc. bushes, new fuel tank, brake pipes etc) than a car that's been languishing in a garage for ten years. Similarly, 200k motorway miles will have been a lot kinder to the car than 100k city traffic miles. Consider 100k as low miles for an E30.

You really need to judge these cars on condition, NOT on abstract parameters like book stamps and clock mileages. Rust, wear and repair are far more important criteria.

this post says it all.For 5.5k you should get a really nice cab here.just inspect it carefully for rust and make sure it has a manual roof in good condition

I would not exclude autos. They suit the car much better.

as said above, you should have no problem finding something within your budget. I'd not have leather in a soft top though.

Why would it be guaranteed rust free? There is a lot of coast in South Africa and it isn't always that hot in all parts. Roads are a lot harder on the cars as well.

I have also owned a South African built E30 in the UK, I really didn't think the rust proofing on it was up to the same standards as those built in the UK.

or check out E30s in Cyprus.

Little in the way of rust, RHD, lots of pre-facelift cars but guaranteed cracked dashboard 100%

Well, not guaranteed, but almost certainly better than an Irish car. There seem to be quite a few old BMWs kicking round too...
