going to look at an e30 tomorow, seller is a trader at a garage/dealer of some sort, says he got it 2 weeks ago , put a year mot on it, so has no V5 as hes still waiting for it in post, but will give a reciept etc and forward it on when recieved
is it safe to buy like that ? what sort of measures should be taken ?
also it has no tax, i presume i wouldnt be able to tax the car ? (or can you do that with the v5 slip he should have with it from when he bought it ?)
although as hes a trader i presume he will be able to tax it ? if i buy it

As long as he has the new keepers supplement he should be able to tax it
Strange that he didn't fill in the traders section and send that off when he bought it and retained the log book

he said he has the green slip with it so i can use that to tax it online , is that right ? could i take that slip and the post office and tax it ? then again i wouldnt have insurance docs, do you need them to tax it online ? (ive never taxed a car online how does that work)
he also says it has no history, and is waiting for the prev owner to send it , which may result in no history ever making it to me if i buy it, but im not overly fussed as its a cheap daily, obviously its all dependant on the shell condition and rust situation but only going on the off chance its a bargain and not far away

If you are insured and it's on the MIB database then taxing it online will not be a problem

ok cool, so i can buy it, bring it home, ring up insurance then tax online, sounds easy enough , how long would it take for thr MIB database to be updated after getting insured ?
im going soon as im up and ready, potentialy could have me a new daily parked outside tomorrow
, although it may turn out to be a dog

Depending who you insure with it can take a few days but some will also email you the policy and certificate which you can print and take the to the post office along with the MOT and v5 supplement

You cannot tax it online without the v5 I remember trying to do this on the mrs golf and the insurance document was going to come through in 3-5 working days and due to their company policy they couldn't email or fax anything through! So I ended up taking the mot cert new owners slip and the insurance cert of my friends recovery company to the post office and got it done straight away.

It cannot be the receipt of payment has to be the insurance certificate.Kos wrote:Depending who you insure with it can take a few days but some will also email you the policy which you can print and the to the post office along with the MOT and v5 supplement

Yes you can, I've done it.Mo13 wrote:You cannot tax it online without the v5 I remember trying to do this on the mrs golf and the insurance document was going to come through in 3-5 working days and due to their company policy they couldn't email or fax anything through! How you you managed to insure a car with a mates policy is a bit strange unless you put the new owners supplement (the temporary log book as such) in you mates company name
Sorry for not making it clear but yes it has to be the policy certificate. AXA / Norwich union and the other big insurers do this. Everything is online and you can print it and its accepted at the post officeMo13 wrote:It cannot be the receipt of payment has to be the insurance certificate.Kos wrote:Depending who you insure with it can take a few days but some will also email you the policy which you can print and the to the post office along with the MOT and v5 supplement

He said policy, not receipt. I'm fairly sure when they email you the policy it would count as contract made as well as any certificate.

Guys how would it effect it, if the supplement has got his name on it ? Not sure if he would of filled it in or it's blank, bit if its his name on the slip , then my name on the insurance cert etc , would they do it ? Although sometimes then I've gone post office to tax they have barley looked at it all properly

I dont think they should do as its the New Keeper Suppliment , but id try it anyway . Explain you were unsure on filling it out and the seller did it all and gave you that and said you can use it to tax . May get a sympathetic person on your story and turn a blind eye

If you tax it online, the disc will go to the previous owner as the details won't have changed on the DVLA database yet

Just added his company name in brackets after the name on the new owners slip as I was going to get a new c5 anyway and won't need the slip anymore.Kos wrote: How you you managed to insure a car with a mates policy is a bit strange unless you put the new owners supplement (the temporary log book as such) in you mates company name
Think it would be easier just to get the dealer to buy it for you. And remember to get a receipt on headed paper from the dealer.

It's all a matter of timing. If the old V5 hasn't yet been 'processed' at the DVLA, then the number on the green slip will work (if the full number is on there - sometimes has a digit at one end missing), but if the new V5C has been authorised, the old number will no longer work online.Chris_B86 wrote:If you tax it online, the disc will go to the previous owner as the details won't have changed on the DVLA database yet
Regarding insurance, when you tax online, the car just has to be on the MID. Doesn't matter, for this purpose, if it's your insurance, the previous owner's (which he hasn't cancelled), or the seller's traders' insurance.

Am I right in thinking that when you tax online you still can't legally drive the car until you have the tax disc to display?

You can print off a confirmation email, and as long as you carry that around with you it's fine, you have 7 days graceKedge wrote:Am I right in thinking that when you tax online you still can't legally drive the car until you have the tax disc to display?

+1, you will need the document number off reg docs to tax it online, your best bet is to try it at the post office, as your name will be on the new keeper supplement, so you'll be fine, whereas if you do it online, it will probably go to the previous owner.Chris_B86 wrote:If you tax it online, the disc will go to the previous owner as the details won't have changed on the DVLA database yet

No, you can buy it, ring up insurance . tax online. then bringpolsta wrote:ok cool, so i can buy it, bring it home, ring up insurance then tax online,

Don,t forget, even if you trailer it back home to private land, it will
need to be Sorned and insured, I think.

It can be sorned and uninsured if on private land, the new rules are it can't have a valid tax disc if there is no insurance in place, so if you cancel insurance on a car, you have to send the tax disc backgooner1 wrote:No, you can buy it, ring up insurance . tax online. then bringpolsta wrote:ok cool, so i can buy it, bring it home, ring up insurance then tax online,

Doesn't need to be insured when on SORN thankfully, it only needs to be insured when not on SORN.gooner1 wrote:No, you can buy it, ring up insurance . tax online. then bringpolsta wrote:ok cool, so i can buy it, bring it home, ring up insurance then tax online,

Strictly speaking this is incorrect. The law requires you to display a current tax disc in the lower left portion of the windscreen when using a car on the public highway at all times, and hasn't been updated to take modern technology into account.Chris_B86 wrote:

In most cases your confirmation email will be accepted, but if you are not displaying the disc, the crime has been committed.

Ahhhhhh, so if you're unlucky even to get pulled by the police in this situation it's certainly a case of needing to be as polite and apologetic to avoid them issuing a penalty notice if they so desired.Brianmoooore wrote:Strictly speaking this is incorrect. I thought it had been updated to be honest. I've been questioned regards to my tax disc in the past and the email has satisfied the officer, once they have done a DVLA check to confirm it isn't a spoof email and the vehicle is actually taxedBrianmoooore wrote:Strictly speaking this is incorrect. Dip the oil when it is running after you have been for a drive, hopefully it will be on the marks, red and not smell burn't. The gear changes shpuld be smooth but firm with no jolts or slurring between gears. What is the turd ?
On a positive note, when crossing the bridge, an auto box weighs more than a manual !

I'm sure you know this but check battery tray, inner arches, usual mechanical bits, clutch, gunk on oil, leave it idling 15 munutesand check for overheating. Also check carpet in car and boot for water leaks
