just after some general info! my old man owns a E34 535i and said that i could use the engine for a 335 conversion! i would not undergo the conversion myself i would use my local and very trusted BMW specialist, just a question how much can i steal of the E34 and transfer onto mine? he wants the car to share if we go ahead with the conversion, just wanted to know of the people who have done this conversion and how much has it cost them on a whole!!

Many Thanks,

Ben :thumb:

I think you can only use the engine and gearbox. Pretty much everything else is un-usable... suspension and stuff like that is all different.

You'd need custom engine mounts, an M3 propshaft, and various other custom made parts.

Hang on until Toby or Andy get here... they'll help you out more...

Giles.

right here i am then! although how much use i'll be is another thing altogether!

if it's a manual e34 then you're laughing, it's the best donor. i have just bought myself an e34 engine to replace the tired e28 one (see sig pic).

look on www.e30.de, on the english language 335i link, to find where you can buy suitable engine mount brackets, they're not too dear.

Giles seems to know his stuff, an M3 prop fitted on mine perfectly with no shortening required.

can use original e30 gearbox crossmember.

need to shorten gear linkage, but not a major headache.
can't use e34 prop, diff, suspension, anything really.

wiring shouldn't be a major headache.

need either an e30 m3 exhaust, or a custom one as i have made using an e36 backbox. the e34 exhaust manifold and downpipes fit really nicely

bit of bulkhead alteration needed to make sure everything clears, depending on how far back you want to mount the engine. (look on e30.de for more info but basically i have mine between P2 and P3 (made my own brackets) and only minor panel beating was needed, and it drives really nicely, doesn't feel nose heavy.)

cost will mostly be labour. about Ԛ£150 for the engine mounts, maybe Ԛ£100 for e30 m3 prop, Ԛ£150-200 for an exhaust... then obviously suspension and brakes, but that's general e30 upgrades rather than 3.5 specific.

that should do for a start. anything else, only too happy to help if i can!

Hi mate,it will work out quite expensive to let a garage do the whole thing,if you can do any work on it your self like plumbing the cooling system up and wiring etc then it will save you quite a bit of dosh.

Is the E34 a manual ?

The engine mounts i used were bought from http://www.e30.de .They cost about 140 quid delivered. You could get the garage to make them up but it could cost you more in labour.

How much does your garage charge per hour ?

Start looking for that M3 prop as they are fairly hard to find i think ? If you can't find one you can get one made up out of the E30 and E34 props for about 145.

Other big cost's(depending what you use) are uprated suspension, exhaust,LSD dif(3.64 ratio is best) and an E28 535 rad is about 125 new.If you need a new clutch or just fancy changing it whilst its all in bits then thats 160.

Theres a few work in progress pictures of mine on this page

Could I use my 318iS rad...? It's brand new and I'd be loathed to fork out for another one... but it's a deeper radiator than standard... so could cope with the extra heat dissipation... or is it a matter of using the E28 rad becasue you have to mate all the pipes together... but then again, I could 'persuade' water pipes to go to where I wanted them.

Just asking for future reference...

Giles.

if its a similar volume then it should be fine Giles. everyone says use the e28 one simply because it's a big rad that happens to bolt straight on. it's a big area but thin. also if it's a bit marginal there's loads of space in the front mask to bolt on huge electric fan(s)!!

build yourself one mate! my new engine only cost me Ԛ£100, you'll probably get more than that when you sell the m42!!

Doubt if I'll get Ԛ£50 for it... 185k with 3 re-builds!

Got a chip, BBTB, induction kit and stainless exhaust for it, so that'll pay for some of the transplant... hopefully.

Will be towards the end of the year... a winter project I feel.

3000...? Yay! Didn't even notice...

Don't get me wrong, the 318iS is great fun, but just not fast enough.

Will be doing this for definite after I a) get settled more securely at work b) move into new house and sell current one and c) get married. End of the year for sure. Until then, 16 valve screaming for me...

Not going to Lakeside mate, the next meet you'll see me at will be Donington mate where you can have a ride around the track if we are allowed to swap around.

Which reminds me they(Donington Park) never replied to my email to see if passengers can go out in more than one car :?

Usually, drivers and passengers can swap about as they please... as long as the driver is registered, they can drive anything. As long as the car is also registered, the driver can be any of the drivers that were at the briefing...

...I think.

Same at Cadwell. Cadwell and Donnington are part of the same group.

All the cars had stickers on though, so you couldn't bring on another car... (unless you swapped the sticker over!)

335i has more power than his sport with more torque also, so i would imagine they are a little bit..

yes the E34 is a manual and my at local BMW specialist the lads are brilliant i cant doubt them might go and ask about prices! as for wiring (FORGET IT) i am not touching wiring anything else but that! i think that can be left to the garages own devices! first of all i will try and get all the bits together before i can start the conversion! best to start that way dont you think??

Looks like i will be driving round in the family chavalier for a bit then if the plan comes together!! :drive:

manual

you lucky sod!

when i have a minute, it might be next week as i'm off to amsterdam in a few hours (unnecessary information i know!) i'll write you a parts list to look out for, as you say much better to do it that way, my project was held up constantly because i was looking for bits like for prop.

for example you'll probably want a manual e28 m535i (single mass) flywheel...

do it!

to be honest dude i think there is no difference on the road, as the 3.5s jst dont rev as well, 3.5 better low down and mid range, but 2.7 kills em at the top end i reckon. mine and andys (heavily modded 3.5) do similar gtech times but he's on tall diff, so this dont count really.

basically if it was my money id go 3.5 rather than spending shedloads on a 2.7 to be as fast

PLUS u can say ure packing a 3.5!!

3.5 is a fair conversion. your right about your car karen. it will keep up with a standard 335i.

one problem with the m30 conversion. the extra weight on the front.

Jon, just curious as I'm not in the position to buy one right now, but will be in the future, what miles has this engine done?

Is this the kinda thing you get in quite a lot, or is this just a one off...?
