Twin factory downdraughts on a 205xs, never had to touch them in 38k miles of use and twin 40 dcoes on a pinto engined westfield (sub 20 mpg thirst, but thats what happens when you squeeze as much as you can out of one of these lumps) and twin 40's also on a van engined 924 with a home brew manifold, economy wasn't much worse than my other standard one and performance seemed better. This one did need a tune before every MOT, but thats probably more to do with them still being jetted for the Lotus they came off.
The issue is not that the car is a bodged up cantankerous undriveable thirsty sack of sh1t that does not start on a cold morning. I hope not anyway
The issue is that the OP has , by his own admission, ZERO mechanical skillz. Do you still think this car is suitable for him ?

Most mechanics do not know what a carburettor is , what hope will they have trying to figure out what to do with two of them from a 70s Alfa/Fiat/Wartburg that have been retrofitted to a car that never had them ?

To be honest the carb set up in question isn't overly complicated, so i guess it depends more on how hands on the OP wants to get rather than if they are capable.

If in any doubt then why not have a look on the webcon site?
i'm sure there'll be a set up guide somewhere on there?
just a thought.

I think what pete is alluding to is, that Webbers and similar setups take some fettling once in a while and a little bit of basic mechanical knowledge(iv had a few different setups normally on pinto engines though).
So Unless you want to be constantly shelling out for a mechanics time to do the work it would be wise to at least get a basic knowledge of carbs.

The 'tuning' is the easy bit. The initial set up/ correct jetting/optimizing of ignition timing etc is the really time consuming bit that is very seldom done properly which is what gives these carbs a bad rep and often makes the car they are retrofitted to slower than stock.
The reality is, it is 2012 and carburettors suck, literally

I am actually very pleased with the SU HIF 44 on my Minor Traveller - reliable, easy starting, good economy and throttle response, reasonable power.
I have a Weber 34ADF on a Fiat twin cam Minor (the original twin-choke carb for that engine), and it's been pretty tricky to set up right, so goodness only knows what twin DCOEs are like...

Cheers Mate I'll run it past Boyd and take it from there. Its good to know there are places to go that come recommended

From my experience with Webers on a Fiat twin-cam, check for an aftermarket fuel filter in the fuel line, as these can restrict the fuel flow leading to severe flat spots - the Webers have built in fuel filters so external ones aren't really needed.
Also, it may be worth opening up the carbs and using carb cleaner to clear out all the jet passages, as they tend to become gunged up on older carbs.
Best of luck with it...
