While BMW set up the car for the right balance of comfort and performance, people adjust their suspension depending on their specific needs, whether its increased comfort or increased performance. But either way it means buying the correct parts for the situation.
To that end, each component is critical. Each shock and spring has to support 300kg of weight, a quarter of the car, on a steady even path while the wheels are bouncing up and down to the road conditions. Lowering springs reduce the height of the suspension, and therefore the amount that the wheel can move up and down, but to compensate they use thicker steel so that they can still carry the weight of the car.
Butchering a normal spring means that you're removing that much strength from the suspension; when the wheel hits a bump it will be launched upwards, effectively punching the car from underneath, and you've removed the car's ability to absorb that shock just because you want to be cool in front of your mates.
This will ultimately mean that a raised manhole or a nasty pothole will send your car fishtailing. If we're lucky, you'll crash into a tree and only kill yourself, but knowing Sod's Law you'll take out a family of three on your way, killing them and saving yourself. Just because you wanted some stance, some lows, the right profile to make your car look sick, innit.
It's only a 316, and it's only a manky old Beemer, but it's still a 1.2 tonne killing machine and it demands a certain degree of respect. Taking an angle grinder to the springs is just plain stupid.

We're trying to save your life here, and that of others. Bodging a car in the way you're asking about is playing with fire. It's nothing to do with penis size or shiny paint or being an internet hardman.
But talking with that sort of mouth won't do you any favours.

I've lowered my car 60mm all round, going to put e90 top hats to lower the front a tad bit more some day.
My car had 45mm front struts and i had them replaced with the donor cars 51mm front struts (318is conversion). On the rears i have stiffer dampers which is a must if your running wide/dishy wheels plus i have rolled my rear arches.
My cars not my daily and ive covered less then 100miles since lowering it. I have driven only over one speed hump and i was running 17s, so im yet to experience it running 16s and 15s
If you want to lower your car more then 40mm, i would invest in stiffer dampers as it will reduce it bouncing and catching. If you have the extra cheddar then buy a good quality set of coilovers.

The University of Penge has recently finished an in depth research project into vehicle ride height and intelligence. The findings were conclusive, the lower ones car , the lower ones IQ.
You only need to read through the regular "What coiloverz" "How low can I slam my 316" "How do I stop foooking my sump?" to realise that the findings are hardly suprising and pretty obvious and that they could have saved
their £1.4 mill

The findings on their study into " What sort of person owns a Gimp and admits to it in polite circles, or on the zone" have not been released yet , so don't get cocky !
Sadly, that's the Zone these days. It's now degenerated to the point where there are very few posts worth reading. This one is a prime example - do you humour these Mongs, or get hating?pacerpete wrote:

This may well be the case, but there is also a very Luddite view from some of the older zoners that become very aggressive towards the questions.Andyboy wrote:Sadly, that's the Zone these days. May I suggest a Zone wiki is written to clearly run the new 'stance' based users through how to get an e30 to there desired ride height, but also indicate the side effects to a form over function ride height.

Why would we want to do that - more cars that are scrapped the better. Fewer chavs, even more so. Double win!oldroydsr4 wrote:This may well be the case, but there is also a very Luddite view from some of the older zoners that become very aggressive towards the questions.Andyboy wrote:Sadly, that's the Zone these days. I know I'm wasting my breath but you can lower an e30 alot and still retain a level of driveabilty (admittedly not to the level of a standard e30 on balloon 14's) , using an adjustable beam shortened shocks, lifting the engine, install sump guard etc etc.scjimbo wrote:Darwinian theory in actionGert_8 wrote:Why would we want to do that - more cars that are scrapped the better. I agree. That's why that is a very old pic...Brows gone & BBS recently purchased. Also raised on eibach springs and the appropriate shocks.

Personally I have not cut any springs. However I knew a guy who had a 323 E21Green wrote:Well this quickly went down the usual route![]()
Out of curiosity, who has cut springs before and had a bad experience?
He chopped a shed load out of the springs. The result was the biggest abortion I have ever seen. The poor old thing dragged its sorry ass around until eventually the fuel tank wore through.
It was a very sad end to an amazing car.
when i bought my mineral blue one i jacked the back up and the springzz fell out so i bought some uncut ones from a scrapyard but only to find out after fitting that touring springs are different
