What you need depends on how the car is to be used.
Everyday use, 3.46 or 3.64
Road and track use, 3.73 or 3.91

I've got a 3.73 in mine, but it is a track car. With road tyres on I can do rolling burnouts pulling away in 2nd, don't need to bother with 1st

I can't remember what mine is, 3.46 or 3.73. I have a usable 1st gear but I can also burn out in 2nd and spin wheels whilst moving in 3rd.!

bl**dy hell that sounds fun !! ok have to admit i'm feeling the need for a torquey cruiser in the cab so think i'll go with low ratio, 3.46 or lower, will keep my eyes peeled and do some swatting up on what will fit in the car as i've read there are small, med and large sizes.

Put a 3.64 in the cab.

I wouldn't recommend a 3.73 for a road car personally, but it's perfect for what I want. Medium case is the one to go for, a 325 diff of some description

3.64 comes only on largecase.

Progress on the engine this week has mostly been cleaning old oil off the block, old gasket stuff and getting the block ready for painting. Shed loads of white spirit, scrubbing and wire brushing later its looking much better, although the garage looks trashed !! I'll get some pics up soon. I've cleaned up and bagged up all the components and just have the front timing chain cover to remove so i can get the chain, guides and stuff out. I'll get the oil pump and chain off today also. My garage is looking like an M30 parts store !!

loads of scrubbing with white spirit and then wire brushing bought the block back to bare metal and then a coat of satin black hammerite. couple more coats and it should look good.

flywheel end which was literally coated in thick oil, none of this was visible at all. White spirit and an old toothbrush bought this up nice, new oil seals in order i think!!

Spent ages looking at peoples M30 conversions mostly on here to see what the best looking colours are for the various bits. Lee - your's looks great so i'll probably do something very similar to yours if you don't mind!!!

Sound, The colour i used on mine was Hammerite aerosol hammered black, it comes out more a charcoal colour.
Goes on really nice with a suprisingly good finish, coming up to 4 years now and still looks good.

Id replace that rear crank seal while you can get at it. If it was covered in oil then it probably means its on its way out.

Hi Rav, funny you should say that, the first batch of stuff arrived today in the post, well worth it i'm sure but not cheap!!! Recognise some bits here !!



Another order on the way from BMW then a load from Matt at ECP. Soon as i get my engine crane back from TPS i can get the lump in the boot of the trusty e39, i found a truck repair garage near work that can take off the cranknut for me, wip it off, take off the lower timing chain cover and send the boxes off for blasting and coating. Think i'll give the oil pump a good clean like you did also.

I ordered a complete Elring H/G set, and most of the seals were in there, and exhaust gaskets.

Taking the pump is not too difficult, should take you about 1hr to do.

right, time to get this block sorted, took it round a local garage and they got the crank nut off pretty quick, i was well impressed, that windy drill did well.

also, this arrived from the stealers, xmas come early for me

so got the crank nut off and then took these bits down to the local blasters to get cleaned up and painted, all in about 20 bits, some silver and black and some just for cleaning up, they charged a ton which is not bad i think

so here chain end in stages

yer, both sides mate, did you see the big crack in the tensioner side in the above pics ? Had a good look at the chain and sprocket and they look fine, think i'll re-use them. Just thinking if i should replace the big end and main bearings now...or not ???

No, just looked at the goodie bags, seen them.

I would be replacing all the main bearings and big end bearings if you have it stripped down.
YOu won't find any in the UK apart from the main dealers, and they were quoting me £900 plus vat for those and piston rings.
If yu need some, you'll need to have the crank measured to see if it hasn't had a regrind.
Then PM Maggspower, I got mine thorugh him from America.

I got mine from the UK . It was around £160 all in for big and main bearings.
