These are really doing it for me at present and I am seriously considering buying one when I get back from holiday in a few weeks time.

Looking at the facelift ( 02 onwards ? ) M sport naturally, not bothered whether its manual or auto

Apart from the front wing rust issue what should I be looking out for ?

Am I right that these have issues with crankcase breather hoses and the waterpump is the crappy plastic impeller type and the rads only last 5 minutes ?

Anything else to look for ?

I'm ideally looking at around £4k, sub 100k with FSH for a well looked after car - seems to be realistic looking at autotrader

Any other pointers would be appreciated :thumb:

the thermostat is electronic and expensive, the lower arms are ally and hence the ball joints can't be replaced independantly, are you sure you want a sport, the 330i as standard is on 17's and is the perfect balance of sport / comfort, any harder and you'd have to slow down due to our crappy roads? Check all the rear tailgate electrics, the wires fatigue and cause mot failing trouble, check the rear arches very carefully for rust, expect to see 1L oil/1000 miles to be normal consumption. Ps) I have one an 02 plate on LPG that costs the same on fuel as a dieseasel doing 47mpg. . .

Nearly 50bhp more
40.

The M54B25 produces 192bhp and the M54B30 231bhp.

The auto boxes are actually quite reliable and an oil and filter change is wise circa 80-100k despite being "sealed for life".

Suspension

Front wishbone bushes wear out at approx 40-60k depending on wheel size and how the car is driven.

Rear trailing arm bushes wear as to rear shock top mounts.

Rear coil springs are very common for breaking normally at the bottom coil.

Shock absorbers are normally weak by about 100k and a set of Bilstein B4's coupled with some Eibach 35mm springs give a better ride and better handling than the M sport suspension.

Brakes

Calipers a prone to seizing, normally the fronts

Rear brake lines can go rusty and cause the car to fail an MOT. To repair correctly is a pain of a job on a drive way as it involves lowering the fuel tank. Wire brush and wax oil before the get rusty!

Front discs are prone to warping, especially on the 330 which are bigger than all other non M3 brakes.

DSC pressure sensors can fail leading to the ABS and or DSC light being lit. If one is faulty replace the pair as the other one wont be far behind.

Body work

Front wings on coupes and cabrios are prone to going rusty from the inside out, the arch liner rubs the protection away on the inside and crud rusts the wing out. Remove arch liners and wax oil.

Rear arches can get scabby if not cleaned out regular

The rear subframe mounts on the boot floor can crack and rip out, inspect carefully. Earlier cars are more prone.

Engines

We'll stick with the M54 six pot as thats what you asked about.

Oil leaks from the cam cover gasket, oil filter housing seal are the most common although sump gaskets are not unheard of.

Water pump has a plastic impeller which can fail, coolant rads are normally done by 100-120k and bulge out at the bottom.

Running problems and EML warning lights can be caused by a failing cam sensor, failing lambda sensors, blocked cyclone valves, split vacumm pipes and split intake pipes.

Electrical

The heater blower motor resistor (final stage or "Hegehog") can fail causing irratic fan speeds or only working on full speed and/or a battery drain.

Central locking motors can fail and window regulators can get noisey before failing all together.

There more but that should help you out enough.

the 6 sp manual is overdrive like the E30, the 5sp is direct drive so motorway economy should be considerably better if you get the 6sp, diff ratio's are the same.

Thanks for the info guys - nothing unexpected in that lot.

Fuel economy isnt a massive issue - the only reason I can justify one as a daily is I've just started a new job which is less than 3 miles from home - even coming home for lunch I'm doing a total of less than 11 miles a day.
Its a bit of a worry that there will be lots of cold starts but that will apply whatever I drive.
I'd prefer an auto which seems to be good news as there seem to be more of them for sale.
I want a Sport because I think they look fantastic, future resale should be easier and the non-sport E46 seats are hideous.

Am away on hols in a couple of weeks but should start seriously looking when I get back 8)

I'm not sure how I've put you off with that statement Jaymos, can't stretch to the 6sp variety?

Slightly off topic but we've just lost the left hand brake lights, the body mounted bulb looks ok so I'm guessing the tailgate bulb has failed, or, more likely the wiring to said bulb, however the right hand tailgate brake light is ok. I'm not actually sure how to get to the tailgate bulbs, certainly not obvious from my first poke araound. Is anyone familiar with this problem or could offer assistance.

Have a drive in a 201 BHP 330D before parting with cash, you'll be surprised at how quick they are.

410Nm of Torque, that's more pulling power than an M3..

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_3_Series_%28E46%29

They can be 'chipped' to go even quicker....

The problem is they are usually 25% dearer than a petrol turd and the potential for diesel related financial ruin is very real :(

our lpg'd 330i does the equivalent of 47mpg on diesel, no 330d driven in the real world will do that!

How do you pronounce 'either'? I say 'either', but some say 'either'. Either is correct.

That's what a touring / shooting break is for. 4 doors, plenty of room for frag and better looking to boot .

4 doors are parts cars, end of :)

I don't want a 330d.

A petrol 330i will have plenty of torque for what I need it for - and won't sound like a tractor 8)

Pacerpete.

The four doors a 'van', have been all over in it...nothing wrong with a 330i Sport Cabby, better than a M3 that just shouts 'drug dealer'...an no, you can keep it in your pants.

E30 topless

The four door runs very clean, the engine won loads of awards, hence why the police use them, two coppers, loads of motorway kit, still doing 150mph...

Capri Rob

Go look at one, you'll be pleasantly surprised, tractors they are not, and the 335d new stuff are twin turbo affairs, guaranteed to put a smile on your face.

You seem to see a fair few auto box failures (possibly because so many were specced with Autos from factory). I had a conversation with BM Sport based in London and they suggested go for the manual as they are more robust, the recon replacement cost for the auto is £2,000-2,500 + VAT which would write a lot of these off now. I guess you could reduce this a fair bit by going 2nd hand then having the box oil/filter replaced but surely it's a worry!

Yes, 500nm of torque can play havoc with the auto box, manual boxes all the way...

I know 330d's are decent cars - but I still don't want one.

I only do about 100 miles a week so fuel economy isnt really an issue and as Mr Pacer has already mentioned modern diesels are very expensive timebombs when things like Fuel pumps, injectors, Dual mass Flywheels etc shat themselves.

The only BMW's I'm interested in are the ones I've always been interested in - and they have 6 cylinder petrol engines

76k, Full dealer history - drives like a new car -its a fookin beauty - its had a paint repair around the filler flap but apart from that its mint - gonna get my detailer mate to have a look and see if it will polish out or will get it blown over and then it will be perfect.

Averaged 35 mpg on the 120 mile trip back too

Nope - the handling is superb - very tight, grips like a bastard and very responsive.

My E30 touring has had a complete suspension overhaul with every bush, mounting, spring and shock uprated with OEM or OEM+ stuff but the E46 would run rings around it.

I'll never sell my E30 though :D
