Thats the back end all done. The car is back on all four wheels and spun round in the garage ready for some front end action.

I've got to figure out a way to support the donk whilst I remove the sump and subframe!

Plans for the future are to get the flywheel lightened and move some parts on to put some cash aside for a decent exhaust.

I also pulled the car out of the garage and gave her a little wash. I cant wait to get this finished

I spoke to a few people to try and find the best way of going about painting the underside.

If you look back through the posts you can see there is a couple of stages.

I tried to mix paint with some anti gravel and applied it with a Schultz gun to get the texture/oem look.

This did not work very well as I could not get the colour right.

I ended up getting some solvent based paint mixed up in spray cans and just sprayed it all underneath. I can't stress enough if your going to do this get a good ventilated mask. I pushed the limits of stupidness painting in a sealed area without any ventilation. :o:

If you mean underneath kedge then there`s no need as its now properly sealed and the waxoil will only help crap stick to it causing future problems. A bit in the box sections is never a bad thing mind.

I still want the beast back.

Some more pics of this afternoons bodgery.

I took the sump off and this is what was left of the gasket. You can see it has blown out at the
gearbox end. I also removed some plastic o ring from the pump. I've cleaned up both surfaces ready for re-fitting.

Image
Image
Image

Ive basically used a crane that Lee kindly lent me to take the weight of the engine so that I can get in a clean up both front chaise legs and repeat the same process as the rear.

Image
Image
Image

Some major bodge work was required to remove the subframe whilst supporting the engine.

Image

All ready for the new sump gasket and some serious TFR action. This was the bit on the front leg that I wanted to get too sort out hence the subframe coming off. Should all clean up nice though.

I've just done the sump gasket on mine in a very similar way, hated the whole job. Most my gasket stayed stuck to the block and was a c*nt to get off.

If you want it to stay rust free then you do, waxoil wont ever cause problems, and is the only long term rust prevention ive seen that works. If you keep the water out, there will be no rust, at the end of the day paint is only microns thick and nowhere near as good at keeping the damp out.
Sorry boys, but all those nice new brackets, covers and nuts/bolts will soon dry up and start rusting after a year or so of being on the road :(

I'm unsure of what to protect it with. I don't think a bit of wax will do it any harm especially in the arch's etc. She will be having some paint in the new year and dare I say it it will only be used in the dry. :o:

I agree about the bolts as well Dan but it only cost £40 to have them all plated locally. Dry use should prolong the shiny :D

I managed to get the gearbox off today. What a complete PIA job. I've took some pics of the bell housing just to show how badly this thing was leaking from the sump. It looks like the fly and clutch have had a good dose of oil as well. What do we think?

Image
Image
Image

I've replaced the sump and cleaned up all around the donk. The good news is that it would only appear to be the sump that was leaking. No signs of oil from the head, oil filter housing, pressure switch etc.

I thought it was about time I updated this. Its been far to long since I did any work on the sport so I made a start again today with the hope of getting the car ready for the summer and possible moving her on to a new home :?

I had a bit of a mare when taking the BTB off as the last owner had the head gasket done and some of the head bolts had been replaced with bolts :o:

Image

Anyway all 12 studs present and correct and a nice clean M20!

I've basically fully painted the car underneath now. It was much easier with the exhaust and front sub frame out the way and looks mental. I will get some good detailed pictures up soon but I was loosing the light when I finished today.

Many thanks to Dan and Steve for the front shock insert advice.
I was a little unsure the correct method to build them up but Steve put me right.

Lots of shiny powder coated bits and new bearings, rubber etc.

Image
Image
Image

And finally a skinny flywheel thanks to Dan.

Image

I'm ordering a new clutch tomorrow with some front disks ready for next weekend.

They are RPM top mount adjustable Andy :o:

They might be a bit hard for road use but I'm going to give them a go. I like a good hard ride and there is always the option of putting some billies back in.

Dan advised me to put some OEM ones in but I bought these a while back and I'm going to try them.

I'm out in the sticks with a good selection of quality roads with good road surfaces.

I'm no city boy! :D

A quick update.

I've been a busy boy for the last three day's working in the cold garage.

Front arches all cleaned up and painted. Check those pads out, Proper!

Image
Image

I fitted the lightened fly along with the gearbox that had the seal replaced plus some fresh oil.

Image
Image

I then plumbed in the fuel lines, topped the donk up with some fresh oil and cranked her over a few times using the flywheel before jumping the m20 off :D

The prop is back on along with all the heat shields. Starting to come back together.

Image
Image

I just need either a log manifold or to stump up the cash for the rear section of the BTB3. I managed to pick up a club sport rack so its pipes from Dan and were about there. :D

Thanks for the comments.

Simon thanks but I think I'm just going to plumb for the BTB3. I've got at least three more month's before she is road worthy which should give me enough time to get the brass together for the fannymold.

Dan I will need some spacers and UJ's as well. I will give you bell at the end of the month, ie pay day.

Paul, long time dude. How is the more door coming?

Jim it's just solvent based lachs silver straight from an aerosol.

If you have a skeg back through the thread you can see I had various attempts at mixing paint with stone guard after seeing the results on the diddlers more door.

I spoke to Matt about mixing it up but couldn't get the colour right.

In the end I just used aerosols that I had mixed up in the correct colour.

The hardest part is getting the underside clean so that you are not painting over all the oil and road scum.

TFR and the gaffers scrubber brush gets it clean!

Enjoy
