I've got a leaky radiator that needs to be changed, do the m40 engines share the same part and if not how can I tell an I.s one?

The IS rad is bigger than the M40 one. The M40 will work fine though. I've used them before without issue.

well i got a rad and intended to fit it today, come home and think the pikeys have been around and taken the old one from my garden, i'm quite surprised as it wasnt on display or anything. Now in the papers for my car there was a recall note for a dodgy pressure cap so i presume this had been replaced under recall. As the old rad has now gone i've got the new one with a cap but i'm not sure its the right one, how do i tell?

Fitting a second hand radiator is akin to using second hand oil filters and brake pads!
Radiators are service items, and should be replaced with new at 100,000 mile intervals.

I have got an M42 318is engine in my touring, using the M40 318i radiator with no issues at all. It runs at just under half way on the temp gauge under all conditions.

Rite well I got hold of a brand new nissen radiator for a 1.8 I knew it would be smaller but based on what I've read it should work ok I measured the 2 and there's about an inch difference in width. Now what I did notice is that where the fan shroud has 2 clips at the top I thought the rads may be different but the shroud woul still fit, wrong! the distance between the holes in the rad for the clips also differs which means I also need a smaller shroud, this got me thinking what other differences are there? Will the the lower pins will also be narrower so will it even sit on the lower rad mounts ok don't want to start changing other parts just to get this to work.

You'll need to change the LH lower mount to a 90mm one, but it's only a couple of quid brand new from BMW.

Thank you mr Moore, is that the n/s mount?
Just a few more questions

Are all the pipes the same size?
Are all the viscous fans the same because if I change the fan shroud for a 1.8 will the m42 fan foul the smaller shroud?

Thanks

The 318iS rad is the same as the 24v E34 520i and 525i.
