E30 welded diff

Hey fellas. just bought a welded diff and when i got it back and took it out of it's bin bags there are a few bolts missing from behind the outputs like in this photo

IS it just going to be a case of put new bolts in and tighten them up?

Just put it back in the bin bags

Put the bolts back in, put it on the car. Make sure the side windows are clean.

Road car, or dedicated drift machine?

The welded diff will have shaken them out and will wreck everything in and around the rear axle,welded diff = ok for ford sierra

If it's a road car, how do you propose to undertake low speed tight turns? Wheels spinning and smoking no doubt?

dont take this as an argument but have you driven a welded daily? , as from friends an my experiance what you have just said never happens , only a little bit of backlash at very low speed turning but that dont smoke up tyres;)

Only round the yard and only at slow speed before telling the deluded owner to weigh it in, I wasn't going to be getting it through its MoT for him, but that I'd buy the bumpers off it.

At slow speed tight turns - exactly the scenario where you need a diff - as the rear wheels are trying to:- 1) drive the car, and at the same time, 2) turn at different speeds - it's useless. It hops and jumps. My point was that the only way to do it smoothly is with the tyres smoking.

"..... automobiles and other wheeled vehicles, a differential allows the driving roadwheels to rotate at different speeds. This is necessary when the vehicle turns, making the wheel that is travelling around the outside of the turning curve roll farther and faster than the other. .....If the engine is running at a constant speed, the rotational speed of each driving wheel can vary, but the sum (or average) of the two wheels' speeds can not change."

Noone with an IQ in double figures or who has any degree of mechanical understanding would drive a car with a welded diff on the road, let alone as a daily. I can't do anything about your IQ, but hopefully the extract above and the photos shown earlier can allow you to understand the mechanics of it. Ask an adult to read it to you if necessary.

No increase. I have a friend who owns a performance motor sport company and he was live road mapping a 400 bhp rx-7 with a welded diff. and he said it drove absolutely fine. Alan i'm not going to stack it haha. guess i posted on the wrong forum but whatever, everyone's entitled to their own opinion. And i'm sorry cecotto i can't take advice or criticism from someone who plays golf of all ..... ermm.......... i wanna say sports but it really isn't one lol. cheers for the advice guys

yeah, it probably was the wrong forum to ask that.
while i can't condone the fitting of a welded diff, i know you're not an idiot and i'm sure you'll use common sense while driving, but please be careful as the car will behave differently, especially in the wet.

That's great news about the insurance premium. Who is your broker/insurer? I'm sure there are loads on here who would love to get in touch if they don't load premiums for fitting a welded diff to a road car.

And while you may not take advice or criticism from a golfer, what makes you think I'd give a flying one about what a diffin' sheep shagger from the arse end of Liverpool who can't work out why his welded diff has bolts missing has to say?

I must be a retard, I had a welded diff on my old IS which was my daily. Never had any problems with it and certainly didn't shake anything.

There not as dangerous as people make out.

If you want to keep your chrome bumpers nice then I recommend removing them once your running a welder

Welded diffs are fine and awsome I had one on a e36 325i and one on my e46 328i they were both daylie cars Never once had a problem apart from when I exploded a drive shaft on the e46 when doing a burnout. I will have a welded diff over a LSD any day

Ive had welders on my dailys for over 3 years now. They are NOT illegal for road use. and are NOT dangerous, if anything they give the car more predictable characteristics if the back end steps out. Instead of throwing you back out the other way like an open diff when it grips they step back in progessively.

Yes you get a bit of skipping in car parks etc and this well wear rear bushes quicker. But it really makes very little difference.

i had a welded diff for a while and it does skip abit at slow speeds and was fun in the wet, it just made me laugh but it did vibrate abit.... possibly due to solid bushes

i also drove from liverpool to dover with it and it was fine

If a welded diff assists in getting the rear out, tyres spinning then how can an insurance company allow them as the car will be not fit for purpose on the public road.
The fitting of one for use on the Queens Highway IMO is against the care and duty of care for every other road user as it makes the car behave in a manor that is in contradiction with the highway code. Is 'tyres loosing traction' an offence? Or just what the fuzz use to get money out of us via points and courts.

your talking a load of shit, only cheapskate peasants use a welded diff, save up and Buy an LSD,

it will transform your car completely and make it handle/drive properly

That'll matter for nowt in a civil court if you crash and the third party knows how to go about dealing with idiots who think the road is for their shoddy, bodge special and twatting about like tarts.

Once you diffin' types spend some time in a Renault bathtub (or similar) going 5 abreast into a corner close to a ton with wheels interlocked and all of you are drifting then I'll take some advice from you on handling.

For the record what percentage do those three years with a welded diff make against your total years on the road.
I've managed 24 years with only a 3month gap so far.
