I have had a problem for a while with my e30 325i with a e34 535i engine.

The first problem I had was the engine cutting out and not starting. And when I did manage to get it going it was idling badly and miss firing most of the time. Excessive fumes seemed to be coming from the exhaust at times as well.

When the car would often fail to start at all, the engine would crank and then suddenly the cranking would stop with a "Clunk"

I have an after market Scorpion SA30 Alarm/Immobiliser system fitted and I was thinking it could be a problem with it, not allowing the engine to fire up or making it run poorly and sometimes suddenly cut out.

I have also checked the possibility of it being the Air Control Valve (ACV) But after swapping mine for another that I have and expect to be working the same symptoms occurred. Along with this I checked for any holes or cracks in the air hoses, but nothing. But would this really cause the engine to stall? Or fail to start, I didn't think so.

So lastly I was thinking it could be a Crank Position Sensor, has any one had any trouble with these? Any help would be fantastic as I'm at my wits end.

first thing mate, you said you have the engine out of a 535i which is an m30, and you are in the m50/52 section.

also if you give a bit more detail on the engine swap, ie. what engine/gearbox you have, people will be give you the advice you need
if there wern't people like me,
with cars like mine,
who would you put down to make yourself feel better?

Sounds like your crank senser is playing up when car heats up, the rough idle and fumes is prob just from all the cranking your doing before it fires and the clunk you hear is the engine been flooded and cause it to jam up, it could be other things aswell but try the simple things first

Sorry for messing up where I posted it, I've posted all my topics in the M30 section before so my bad.

Yes I think it may be the sensor so I'm going to have to get one ordered up pronto.

It will be a late M30 HKF, basically a big M20 they run on similar management ie Motronic 1.3.

To check the crank sensor get a multimeter at the 3 pin plug and check resistance on two of the terminals, should be no lower than 500ohm and no higher than 600ohm.
Check this with the engine stone cold then check when it starts playing up.
