Normally due to an abs fault on e36's as the speed signal for the ecu comes from the abs system, have you always had this problem since the engine swap

Yep speed sensor issue.

Best speaking with DanThe.

For some reason my M52 ECU is happy without seeing a speed signal, I borrowed an ECU from Dan once and it went straight into 5500rpm limp.

I'm not sure where you get the speed signal from on an E30. I know on later models there is a blue wire which feeds from the instrument cluster which has a speed signal that turns the radio volume up as you go faster

i heard about this problem aswell but never had abs on my e30 it was a m40 engine, and read about pin 20 on the loom and just left it capped off, wire of death ive heard. used to rev up to 6500rpm but also just put the m50 manifold on it when we saw it wouldnt rev above 5500rpm but well rev over 5500rpm if u blip it, but there is 100% no air leaks

e34's have the speed from the abs and e36's like e30's get it from the diff

Sounds lke speed signal issue to me. DanThe can flash this requirement out of the ECU for you as can I and also map for M50 manifold and remove EWS etc.
