a noisy Layshaft is common Pete, usually due to the tickover being too low ? it will still last forever :D

Using the correct oil helps. Not ATF!

^^^ +1!!

Use of ATF is a daft idea...

Layshaft is definitely the issue here - cured with a rebuild but if you are prepared to put up with it, it will last a looooooong time without going wrong. Putting up the idle speed a touch works wonders!! winkeye

The correct gearbox oil for an E30 is EP80 although you can use a non multigrade SAE30 engine oil.
ATF Dexron makes it rattle, and EP90 can make it hard work to change gear.

Oh and as for ATF, i tried it years ago upon recommendation by a well known Kent based BMW specialist as a cure for stiff gear changes when cold.

Yes it worked but when hot it was to noisey so i changed back to EP80 and its been fine since.

Use this. it hardly thins with temperature. No rattle on start up and smooth gear changes. Once fully warmend up the rattle is still there a tiny bit but overall it makes a massive improvement.

I bought it from oilman.

Thanks for the recommendation but i'll stick with the correct EP80 as i dont get any chatter now on idle at any temp.

Thats good :) a happy gear box. But i meant for sweep. Also its worth taking not of the colour of the sticker on the housing of your bear box. Some of the manual gear boxes are supposed to have ATF in them.

That's correct, some manual trans are meant to use ATF but the getrag 260 used in the 325i is meant to use convertional EP80.

Years ago, I had a Cortina with a layshaft rattle that would wake the dead. Draining and refilling it with EP140 made it quieter...........
