A Waterless coolant system

Has anybody tried this?

Any alternatives?

Interesting, but is it necessary? I find water and some good coolant for day to day use on the roads works perfectly and costs a hell of a lot less than $40 or what ever it is in the Queens money. I think it'll be of more use in a racing situation where the car's components heat to higher level than the average car and normal water/coolant would boil over.

It doesn't necessarily cool the engine lower than coolant/water in a sense it only raises the boiling temp.

Snake oil works as well...

If your cooling system is in good condition,you will need nothing other than a water/anti-freeze mix.

water is surely perfectly ok, although you can buy water wetter to help the molecular interaction between the inner cooling system walls / water jacket, and the coolant. In turn this also claims to reduce hot spots, but not sure how well it performs, if at all.

NO!

you must use a coolant/water mix....all E30's have alloy heads that WILL be corroded by using neat tap water.

come on malc, next thing you'll be telling me that all convertbles and tourings had rear discs and 51mm struts, and that bears defecate in the woods. In response to the TOPIC I used the word 'water' in contrast to 'water-less'

We ran it in a Mosler GT3 car at the Britcar 24hr race this year and the water temperature ran at 110degrees C in free practice. We then changed it for old fashion distiled water and antifreeze and it dropped to 92degrees C in the race. It's £45 for 5litres or something horrendous too.

It is also VERY flamable and it has happened that leaks have occured and caused fires.

Just to add as well the car had a brand new engine and radiator fitted and even the rad cap specified by Evans which was an ultra low pressure one.

You get better cooling with just water rather than water/coolant, not that its advisable

True, but plain water has a lower boiling point, increasing the risk of local boiling at hot spots in the head.

This is why I am suprised at people using a 50/50 mix!

30/70 is what I use.

No! 70% water, 30% coolant, although should be 60%/40% according to your handbook.

I have used distilled water / coolant mix ever since buying my E30 in 2002 as I read that it was less likely to cause corrosion of the head. Haven't had any problems other than it running a little cool since I changed it last time as I followed the 60:40 rather 70:30 ratio.

Coolant sold in Europe contains an anti-corrosion element.

Those fortunate to live in a country where they never,ever,suffer low temperatures will be able to buy an anti-corrosion treatment without an anti-freeze element...

I use one measure of coolant to two measures of water,approximately!
I tend to stand by the car bonnet and ponder what I added last time the thing needed a top up,in summer I usually add neat water,in winter,neat coolant.
I suppose that it would pay me to clean out an old oil barrel and keep the stuff pre-mixed!

I always mix it in a pyrex jug - 2/3rds water to 1/3rd antifreeze.
Have to remember to wash the jug before our lass uses it for food type stuff...

This sounds too good to be true, anyone used this stuff? The only downside so far is £64.95 for 5L!!

Good God!! a fool and his money spring to mind, what about air in tyres, (nitrogen, helium etc etc) 99% uf us have got turds fighting the tin worm!

Wherever I have asked, haven't got a 'go for it' answer.
As confused as ever. Then we have jay Leno videos and Wheeler Dealer episodes to add to it.

The reason I was keen was because in Mumbai the average temperature on a cloudy day is 30 deg C. So the ambient air is not helping keep things cool either. And also saw service history which stated that it had gone in twice to the dealership service station for overheating problems. It's not working ever since I bought it possibly due to a busted fuel pump or something, and now waiting for parts to come through from EU/UK.
