As it seems like a hot topic at the moment thought my experience might help someone who is looking for insurance in the near future with premiums rocketing.

Im 30 going on 31 very shortly. The car is an 87 Tech 1 Sport.

My insurance last year with the sport being my only car was on a 6k annual mileage through Sureterm Direct was £330 fully comp on a classic policy with all the bells and whistles, roadside assistance etc for me and the misses.

Decided that it was about time to retire her from daily service earlier in the year so have bought myself a Subaru legacy GTB as a daily so the Tech 1 does not have to put in another winter on the road and can sit happily in my garage.

My renewal came through this week for the next year on a like for like policy at over £1100!!! 8O I called Sureterm up to find out why it was so much and to change the annual mileage to ”a2 - 3k to get the premium down and the cheapest they could do me was north of £600. :?

After doing the usual searches I called Lancaster as a few people have recommended them, after going through all the usual questions they quoted £233. This was based on 3k annual mileage, roadside assistance, courtesy car with the car stored overnight in the garage. The rep also offered me a £20 buy is now discount.

As the sales rep was going through all the small print he mentioned that if the car is stated to be parked in the garage (to be fair it will 99% of the time when I get my backside in gear and put the bathroom that is in there in the bathroom!!) and it was not in the garage between 23:00 and 07:00 hours and within a 3 mile radius of my house it would not be insured. Also the hire car that was on the policy was an extra charge at £29.99 included in the £213 price.

So I changed the vehicles overnight location to the drive, £25 extra charge for the year with the extra laziness benefit and removed the hire car from the policy as it is only me and the misses and we have 3 cars between 2 of us so don’t need the hire car, the final price came in at £210.38.

All in all quite pleased with that, only improvements I would say is they are a little pushy with their sales patter and they bolted on extras that I have not asked for and don’t need so be aware of that. But well worth a call as for me they were the cheapest by a fair way!!

So £210.38 fully comp, £50 excess, £60 windscreen excess, £5k guaranteed value, roadside assistance relay and home-start, European cover, legal cover and key cover. :D

Holy hell that is a good policy for that price 8O Especially seeing as my excess is like £300 with direct line!

Lancaster definitely seem to get a lot of good quotes for E30's I might as well check them out next year.

Pete best quoted me with a £100 excess, and no excess to pay for a windscreen replacement

Just shows what a bunch of Robbing b/'tards the main insurance companies are

Feel it is important to remember that a classics policy always comes with strings attached....

Rarely available for a daily driver.
Rarely available for a younger driver.

For those youngsters who are carefull drivers and can build a NCD,I have a lot of sympathy,as they,by virtue of big premiums, bear the brunt of their peers carelessness.

Believe it or not, even daimlerman was a teenager once :D and had to pay larger insurance premium's,but with age comes maturity and far fewer claims, and lower payments.

I have always found that adding 'er indoors as a second driver has brought a reduction in the premium, even though she drives only on roads that she has driven on before....slowly and badly...

Is a good point Daimler, also a good point to mention is that on a classic policy you do not accrue NCD, and if you are using a classic policy for a daily and do not use your NCD on any other car after few years it will expire and you are back to stage 1.

They do seem to be one of the best around to me for E30's at the moment :D

beware the renewal.

Lancaster quoted me £150 for my first year in the M3, second year £2,500.

Needless to say I looked elsewhere.

Lancaster are not too bad. I was £118 for my 325i cab last year on 3,000 miles, this year the renewal was £150.

Re-quoted through confused.com website was £120. Called them to complain and they reduced it to £98. Also getting 10% cashback via my virgin card this month so in total just over £89.

Which I think is a bit of a bargain.

There seems to be some good experiences and some bad ones re Lancaster. After being insured thru' Lancaster for the last 2 years, the policy on my Motorsport cab was up for renewal in the last 6 weeks and it had more than doubled to about £330 (on a 3k miles, classic policy). Shopped around and went with RH at £110. Lancaster said they couldn't get anywhere near that. Does seem that prices vary for no obvious reason.

When I wieghed in our Toyota Starlet earlier this summer(£118.40 on the bridge!)I did not bother to cancel the insurance policy with Swinton,as I just knew I would have to buy a replacement or suffer the alternating 'silent/constant rattle treatment' from 'er indoors. So after buying the Fiat Siecento I 'phoned Swinton and asked for a quote to transfer the policy.'£295,please,Mr Daimlerman'......I cancelled, paying £15 for the privilage of eventually receiving my NCB certificate(policy had a NCB of 5 years)and went elsewhere at a premium of £195.
Renewal email came from Swinton earlier this week,so I typed in the Fiat's reg number just for a giggle, and it quoted me £135 fully comp...WTF is going on...?

Simple. They try it on, relying on the laziness of their customers to boost their profits!
Always get a quote posing as a new customer before renewing insurance.
