Unfortunately that wasn't her main reason for dropping in, that would be to sort out the snagging list on the E36 318 shooting brake that I served her

With the other S50 now sold and strapped to a pallet bound for the US, thats freed up my engine stand ready for battle! The next major step on the road to recovery we hope for this car, the donk.

Block ready to recieve all the bits and bobs

The most important bit bar everything being clean
is a good engine assembly lube. This stuff is highly recommended by those in the know. it will never run off like other products so you could leave it for a few months come back and its still as good as when it went on.
The only draw back is it makes the oil go black, not the end of the world in my book and better than metal bits all touching on the first start up.

Rod slug and pin

Lube up

Slide slot together and then you need to get these little snap rings in. 1 each side to hold the wrist pin in place.

Repeat x6. I can't imagine rebuilding a V12. f**k that - get that out quick!

Rings out the box, nice little instructions and also paying attention to TOP written on the 2 top rings, the lower ring is identical either way so can go either way.

Rings on, now all the gaps on the rings are lined up. They want to be all 120 degrees apart from each other before installation.

Lube a tube
I don't know why i went this route by fitting the piston/rods first. I expect most people would fit the crank, it makes more sense and is probably easier. I only really thought that after i'd fitted them all!

Piston ring compressor lent to me by Barry

lube the slug

No.1 in with the arrow on the piston pointing the front of the block

No.3 on the way, not a nice job tapping these down. I was sweating a bit by number 6 knowing how easy a ring can snap.

Made it! then though crank in first might of been a brighter thought

Heres the oil pump drive laid out in kind of its order it all fits. Easier to fit before the crank goes in so i thought.

Lube, then gear wheel

Then cap and clamp. The cap is NLA now, i wanted a shiney one ho well

Shaft with the locking tab and screws.

Caps and main end bolts all clean. The bolts are non stretch here and can be re used no problem

Started putting the shells in and hit my first problem!

On this shell the tabs are slightly too far apart, now i can be a beast but this isn't happening

For comparison, one on the left is ok and how it should be, right one is the wrongun.
So off to the machine shop to get that one sorted me thinks

Shells all in ready for..............

Lube! lots of don't be shy then........

The uber clean, dry, oil ways blown out air line styleee crank was

lubed as it just can't hurt, no chances taken!

And we're in. Now its time to connect the rods up and the shuffle to get them all on

Shells in caps and lubed ready to go

1 and 6 bolted up with 3 and 4 ready for their caps.

All 6 bolted on, plus the main end caps. I've kept 2 off for the machine shop. I've not torqued anything down either and called it a night here. Well this is a couple of nights at it.

And thats how it sits. It turns over by hand so thats a good sign i think!
We've been waiting years for this!

Excellent work - Pity about those caps, there is always something which spoils the party, easy fix though.

I've never used that lube stuff - I used EP140 gear oil instead.
When assembling the rest, try to avoid silicon sealer which is bloody horrid stuff. I've always used Castrol LM grease on gaskets. It carbonises as it heats up and gives a superb oil tight seal, and any excess will get washed off and absorbed by the engine oil. The head gasket goes on dry though!
Another tip - when the engine is built, leave the cambelt off and with the sump full of oil, spin the auxilliary shaft over with a socket (a drill will do it, but an air gun is ideal). That'll get the oil pump going and deliver oil to all the galleries ready for start up. Make sure you fill then oil pump with oil before you fit it, as dry pumps really don't want to know.
When it's firing up time, the engine needs to run at a steady 2000 rpm for 10 minutes to bed in the cam.
Looking good though. This could be running this time next week....?

no chance for next week! i've got a nice holiday coming up, head is at the machine shop, i'm waiting on the camshaft. I know need to get up the maching shop and sort this main end shell out.
i've got some castrol LM grease good tip for the sump gasket!
Also need to re-MOT Bronzit if it runs out soon...............Pete you have the history let me know! Then strip her down and manualise it. Lots to do just time being tight. I can see the light though now

its 5 speed people much better i can vary the loads on the engine better than an auto donk slurring away. PLUS i'm not getting into a restling match with spigot bearing removal. I can aslo test my gearbox too. I hope its not too growly in Neutral but i think i'm hoping a little there. The touring box has a real good growl on these days but thats had 2.7 power from new.
Well i dropped the offending shell off to the machine shop today. They agreed with me after some faffing and doubting at first, then said about bringing all the shells back and all the main end caps so they can play etc. I said forget it, i'm not stripping it back down.
They've not even started on the head so they have all the cards but i shall pester on the phone as i said i can't build/finish it off without their input. Trev hows my inlet rocker? f**k barrys M30 tat!

M30 tat indeed. Thank the Lord you have a nice simple M20 and not the horrid shite that is the M30 head with four unique rocker shafts, springs, washers, C clips and the pure joy of used rocker shafts that love to seize into the head. Fuc&ing scrap.
I detest those things even more than E36 Coupe door handles.

Lubing the rings is not a good idea IMO, you want them to bed in which only happens with little lube, ive always used just cheapie mineral oil
