Hi all,

Quick one to get the thread started. Outside of the gearbox, prop and diff, a tweek to the exhaust manifold, a different throttle cable, radiator and header tank.....

Would an S14 with engine loom, ECU and airbox be plug and play into a RHD 325i sport?

Many thanks!

Pretty much yes, there is a bracket on the passenger wing to take the air box/map sensor but that about it

Another question related to the transplant if I may:

- Is the fuel pump different on an M3? Does it run 3 bar like the M20 does?

The more I look into this, the more tempting it becomes - I am worried! Seem some really super 2002s with S14s transplanted into them.. winkeye

Mike

GO ON, DO IT! I'm looking to do the same conversion into my IS.

I have the engine but am still in the process of getting it all rebuilt (they told me it would be expensive!!), lightened and balanced before tackling the installation. I have a few bits still to source like ECU and airbox but I'm assuming that they are pretty easy to pick up secondhand?

One thing I dont know - will the S14 bolt to my IS 'box? I know the dogleg is preferable but that can come later.

Hope it all works out MikeyBoy!

No

The s14/m3/m10/s38 all share the same gear box bell housing pattern

Stock air box tends to be around s/h but ECU are not as common

I am still engine hunting!! :thumb:

Worryingly, the conversion is making more and more sense.. winkeye

Jason is spot on - ideally you do need the dogleg box for this conversion primarily because of the bellhousing and also because the gear ratios are so well suited to that engine...

Thanks Jason.

OK, so would it be feasable to machine an adapter plate to marry up engine and 'box (think I know the answer to this!) if not it looks like I'm gonna need a box.

Regarding ECU, if it's a pain to get hold of, will an MBE (or similar) do the job?

No worries - I think you will definitely need a box...

As an alternative to Motronic, VAC motorsports do an alternative ECU (which is quite pricey - welcome to the expensive world of S14s!!) and Emerald also comes well recommended - put in Emerald 3d into Google :thumb:

Hope this helps!

Mike

I'm sure somewhere like moselymotorsport would be able to sort you an airbox and ecu.

Doesn't the S14 have a few sensors on the side of the bell housing that would be required if you were going to try and use a different box or adaptor?

Right - a quick update... I have an S14 engine! winkeye

Thanks to Theo for the engine and associated parts, bascially, everything to carry out the installation apart from the exhaust.

To answer MrBenn's question - the S14 does indeed have sensors on the bellhousing for engine speed and rev counter feed (I think..) so these would be needed...

As an S14 powered 2002 owner, just wondered how you are getting on with your conversion.

Regarding ECU`s, Emerald or MBE will be fine. If going to use a std ECU for ignition then look to maxx alpha N setup for fuel, but cost wise , I would go straight for an after market ECU, for ignition and fuel, and then no need for the gearbox sensors.

Cheers,

Dave

Hi Dave,

Thanks for the advice - the conversion is coming along slowly! I have an Emerald ECU now and the engine is being refreshed with new crank seals, clean up, clean injectors etc etc.

I have a carbon airbox on order and various other goodies coming so watch this space!

Full build report will be posted as it happens!

Cheers,
Mike

Ahhhh - just had a look on Slide Motorsport's web page - the car you are referring to has an SR20DET dropped in it - an S14 of sorts (S14 is also a designation for the Nissan 200SX right??)

Just to be clear - I am dropping in a PROPER S14 into my 325 from an E30 M3...

Hi Mikey,

Yes, it would be. I actually managed to get one from Bexley but I guess it wouldn't hurt to have a spare tucked away. How much are you looking for? Prices for ECU seem to vary a huge amount.
