Just a quicky, is it wise to fit a baffle plate to the M50 E34 sump going on to my S50 motor.

The E30 going to be a road car with occasional track days, so is having baffles important.

imo definatly even if its a road car,my s50 lasted 2weeks on the road let alone track, before it started knocking.Once stripped down some of the shell showed strong evidence of possible oil starvation.just launching it from the lights(not that i condone this manner of driving) can cause oil starvation to the pick up.Other friends who have suffered similar engine failure would not consider spending all that cash and effort to miss out a such a crucial part. Its a pain i know but do yourself a favor, don,t be a fool like i was. Others may have other opinions but just sharing my experience, good luck fella

I killed my MR2 by drifting round roundabouts. The big end went big time!

Thanks guys, sounds more critical to have one than I thought first off.

I found a place on a google search in the USA that sell them, is there any places in the UK that sell them :?:

I'd like them for my M50 if possible too... Ideally dry sump would be nice!

No Baffles in my sump. It's been to the Ring, Brands, Bruntingthorpe, Curborough and the Pod, and never had any issues.

I'm not saying they won't help at all, but not fitting them does not mean impending doom and an empty wallet. S50's are known to spin the odd shell even with the proper S50 sump fitted, so don't necessarily assume that any failure was down to oil surge. This is generally due to stretched big end bolts which can be stopped with some ARP (or similar) rod bolts.

Ian.

I was going to do the shells and ARP bolts anyway. Is it wise Ian to change the oil pump for a new BMW pump :?:

Any baffles will help you - get in touch with Nigel aka alloyproducts on here and he might be able to help you. He does an exchange kit for M20s - not sure about S50s but worth a PM to him.

Cheers,

I'm also after a baffled sump for mine, I've done Oulton Park (Track and Drift) and Brands with no issues but I'm off to Spa in April and desperately want it done by then. ARP Bolts are a definate too.

If I get any joy in finding someone I'll post on here, I know Johnno is going to need one done soon too.

THIS MIGHT BE A STUPID QUESTION BUT is it the standard S50 sump that stays with these conversions or is the sump off a different engine?

There is a E39 523i in the local breakers, I was thinking about the sump but it looked different so I steered clear, will it fit a S50 motor or not ?

It will fit the engine, but not around an E30 crossmember

Read the thread in M50 conversions, there is a list of most compatible parts

Apparently they don't even fit that well and for what they are (abit of formed alloy) are way over-priced once you have them landed over here with shipping and duty.

Those VAC ones seem like a small amount of cheap alloy for a lot of money and postage, might be worth asking somebody who races BMWs to have a look.
Would Muinch Legends be the sort of place to ask :?

Munich Legends are more like to run the bank with their punters money

Dan could probably get one made or some like E T A motorsport who prepare a lot of BMW's at club racing level.

Shame I'm using the 3.2 sump with the S54 otherwise I'd be happy to make one up or make drawings for people :p

Might stick an M52 I have in the garage into the Touring now though rather than the M42 thats almost ready so will look into making a baffle while I have the sump off.

Dan or ETA would probably be the best people to go to at the moment though for getting something made up.

I thought that was the VAC Motorsport jobbies?

I need to do something fairly sharpish as I don't want to do Spa without a baffled sump!! :(

Just had this reply from Turner Motorsport, what do you guys reckon?

Shane,

Baffle kit will not fit.  I did the same conversion in an E30 M3, 3.2 using a E34 525 pan.

You really do not need a baffle in this engine unless you plan to run on racetracks that have very steep banking, like, Nascar banking.  These engines simply do not suffer from oil starvation unless they are under a very heavy g-load on a steep banked oval track.

Do you have an oil pressure gauge fitted? For me, that would be more of a priority at the moment

Yes, but it's hard to keep an eye on the gauge when cornering at 120mph round Poulton. winkeye
