The enviromentalists would cause a right uproar , as it is more eco friendly to keep an older car on the road over a lithium powered crapbox.

Also it would be close to forced vandelisum if you got rid of things like E-Types and DB5's and 6's.

Also I rather spend money on the car , rather than loosing most of it's value in it's first 3 years.

The impact alone on the used car market would be a idiotic move. So your car is say 13-14 years old , who the hell is going to pay for a car that no matter the condition is going to meet the scrapheap.

I think those are enough reasons for now.....

The only ruling like that going round is the 15 year rule on London Taxis.

A friend of mine is not too happy with it, especially when they want 42k for a Merc van that you could buy for 15 on the continent.

I like the Jay Leno approach to car power sources - the more electric and hydrogen cars on the road, the more unleaded fuel will be available for us to put in our old cars.

Yeah.. except the 'future' of hydrogen production is supposed to be extraction from fossil fuels. So we will still be competing for the black stuff and getting boned by tax into the bargain. We can't win I'm afraid.

What we need to be wary off is proposals to limit the use of older vehicles.

I understand that in Germany, for example, there is an 'oldtimer' regestration plate and limits on distances that vehicles thus regestered can travel from their home base.

How do you pronounce 'either'? I say 'either', but some say 'either'. Either is correct.

Not quite.

The Hydrogen is extracted from simple water. It's just that you need lots of electricity to separate the Hydrogen and Oxygen molecules. This power is generally derived from fossil fules, but could equally come from renewables.

I imagine Hydrogen powered engines would be very difficult to develop torque from.. I think they'd be high revving beasts.

Electrolysis could be one method (and as you say, nuclear power could be used.. the silly French have loads of nuclear power stations, why not us?). Bacterial action is another.

Back to the fuel argument. I really think of an uneconomical engine as a luxury. One I'm willing to pay for. It doesn't take up a huge fraction of my earnings. You could treble the price and I'd still keep my car.

the current method of obtaining hydrogen, and currently the only viable way is to crack hydrocarbons down to hydrogen and carbon.

which means your basically taking perfectly good petrol and throwing half of the power producing components away.

hydrogen never really will be a viable power source for ic engines, its too hard to produce, the power density is to low, its too hard to store and handle, its far to dangerous, to keep it liquid needs stupid pressure or ridiculous cold and it takes up too much cylinder space in the fuel/air mix.

Hydrogen production is the industrial method for generating hydrogen. Currently the dominant technology for direct production is steam reforming from hydrocarbons.
