Drove the car this morning, parked it up for about 30mins jumped back in it and it was REALLY lumpy, wouldnt run at all as soon as i touched the throttle it cut out completly, then wouldnt run at all, had to leave it and go to work went back tonight and called the AA and they came and had a look and said he thought it was the coilpack which im gutted about as im stuck without a car now over Christmas :(

But once he'd given me his diagnostic he was all questions wanted to look round it, was getting really excited saying how nice and clean it was, how original it was, shook my hand and told me i had a real classic

Although i'm gutted... he really cheered me up :D

I have an IS coil pack and m40/m20 ones if your interested :)

My coil went on mine in the middle of streatham highstreet 8O got it pushed by some locals and a woman. AA bloke came out and dabbed some chemical metal to stop the coil arcing job done :)

If it's an iS you can get rid of the coil pack and go for a Coil On Plug conversion :thumb:

I wouldn't take AA diagnostics too seriously, if I were you.

Bit of a sweeping statement there Brian.
Would have thought it depends entirely on the capability of the individual that attends.

Had an an AA Man come out to me, after my fan blade cut through the top radiator pipe.
Not only did he repair the pipe , that i thought was non repairable, with a rubber type bandage,
he also bled the system correctly and performed a test on the head using a probe.
Then followed me from the centre of Oxford onto the M40 for two junctions to make sure all was ok. He took a genuine interest in the car and imho went far beyond his remit.
Credit where credit's due. That's not to say the OP would'nt be as well to get a 2nd opinion though.

Bit like saying all BMW drivers are Co*k's

+1!

reminds me when we had an early Mx-5 in with a short nose crank which wears down with age, you know this when you look down the pulleys and see the bottom pulley shaking around which in turn creates a hell of a noise..its blatantly obvious when looking at the front of the engine..

customer pulled to the side of the road called the AA..he came out took one look and his diagnoses..

"water pump bearing faulty" it got towed to us we took one look and had to break it to the customer that it would be a little bit more expensive then she first thought lol

its true though there must be a couple of good technicians who know about cars..most of them howeever are profesional jump starters..

Pics would do nicely mate..always good to see another decent i.S about :thumb:

Everyone assumed you had an iS, since the iS is the only E30 that has a coil pack. All other E30s use a single coil.
Since the iS coil pack consists of four individual coils moulded together in one block, and are essentially completely independent of each other, I was extremely sceptical of the AA diagnosis, since it's unlikely that all or most of them would have failed at the same time.
It would still be a very unusual failure if it is the coil gone on yours, but a lot more likely than on an iS.
I'd be checking if the fuel pump runs when you crank it before hunting for a new coil.

I also got a very positive response from the AA guy when I had a flat battery in Camden.

And the security guard at the hospital who let me jump start off his van after yet another flat battery unfortunately occurring in the 'loading only' bay. :o: He never lets me forget that one.

Spot on brian!!

It was the fuel pump!

Anyone know the best place to get one, and if its worth trying a second hand one?

Possibly, but entirely justified, apparently.

No reason not to try a second hand one. I've certainly never bought a new one, and, although I've had the odd failure immediately after I've fitted one, all the second hand pumps I've fitted that have lasted a week without trouble are still going strong to this day, AFAIK.

No, that's the pre '87 external pump. There was a thread with a link to an ebay one of the correct type yesterday or the day before.
