meh...

The only only e30 that handles well on a standard chassis is the m3..bloody awesome.

The rest are horrible understeering bastards. The shells on them are weak.

When you cage them up and fit good suspension they handle well, but the same goes for any car.

They are all slow in a straight line even after you mess about with engine conversions.

Ok, but as stated....Cudas, and others of the ilk ( of which I have a bit of knowledge as I look after a lot of yank stuff including RT's in varying guises, 428 Mustangs, GTO's etc etc,) are crap to drive. The term Classic is almost impossible to define, but E30's have appeared in many reputable classic car mags as future or current classics. The Cuda Hemi is only one in a model line up that consisted of many lesser variants so it would be appropriate to label an E30 M3 as a cult car by the same definition ( being the pinnacle of the model line up).

The performance figures of a std 325i are not bad considering it's age.....approx 7.sec 0-60, top at 138 MPH and a standing 1/4 mile at 15.3 sec (quoted on 1986 E30) are respectable even by todays standards.

Yes they were a performance car in the day, they did have the heals on the 8v gti golf. 16v less so..

The 335d does the 1/4 in the low 14's.

Sure, but apples with apples. The specific output of a M20B25 was way ahead of it's day which is why they are still sought after. A modern BMW Twin Turbo Diesel is hardly a fair comparison, and only manages to knock a second off the 0-60 time......not exactly massive progress. The E90 325i is actually slower than an E30 325i in terms of acceleration.

I do not have a mercedes but i did own an old e55 w210 around a year back.

Out of the box it will eat alot of stuff including the modified e30s with the conversions etc.

So your 350 BHP Merc will out perform a BMW with half the engine capacity? Then I also pose the question.....WTF have you been doing on here for the last six years (and racking up over 3000 posts) if all along you thought the E30 was such a shit car? Are you also a member on Passion Ford or VeeDub and think their cars are crap too?

As in the 335d 2009 onwards? The 3 litre 265bhp? Is that suppose to be a comparison to a E30 325i? :?

I like you Jonb.. I imagine you as a wistful poet with huge sleeves wandering through a dew covered meadow.

"Why am I on this forum?" you muse with tears in your eyes...

"I don't even like these cars that all these people that I don't like keep talking about..."

Life is confusing.

My 320 Touring drains my pockets in fuel, but it's no worse than I expected! The best £200 I have ever spent, beautiful noise, hard as nails and enough power to get by! No racecar though...

'Is the 320i the worst model?'

No.
Just look how many years has it won the PBMWC title?

But then again they are up against a 318's.

Every car has it merits and pitfalls, its what makes choosing a car and then model such fun
And engine choice depends on the individuals needs and realities.
The most important factor when choosing an E30 is rust.
Engines and everything else can be sorted without too much hassle.

I loved my old 320i, it was poverty spec, more-door, shit maroon colour, beige check seats, no alloys, leaked everywhere, cracked dash, dodgy check panel... I'd buy it back now if I had somewhere to put it, it was 100% original and as far as I remember, pretty damn quick off the mark.

Worst E30? How can it be worse than a Baur or a 316 carb or 318 first generation (the 105 BHP version). Six cylinders, 9 secs or so to 60, smooth and well built, and as noted earlier, likely to have been owned by sensible people who looked after them.

I'd have one anytime (except I've a nice iS now and no more room).
Two headblenders, couple of bags of MC Hammer, 5 litres of FFF, a 48ft bastard, a box of jumped-up custard and some soggy chimps

I had a 320i a few years back, an Agate green 1986 car - it was a decent enough thing and went quite well. I don't recall it being bad on fuel, and it wasn't much slower than the 323i I had before (an '84 car).

well this thread really has confirmed a few things to me....

seems the ones who have actually tried them find the 320 to be a perfectly capable car, if a touch thirsty(depending on driving style).

Perhaps 10 years ago when E30's were more plentiful and prices fairly even, the 320i could be looked down upon although they were a popular car when new. Now though, any E30 in nice condition has to be worth having. A 320i has never been 'slow'- mine could put 130 on the clock. Slow is a Morris 1000...

a 316 M10 with a carb and a spaz box is sadly the very bottom of the bag,

I can do you a full conversion to manual and a 6 pot 2.5 ? trust me it will be the best money you have ever spent :D

You'd have to change the loom and all, she's a B-reg...

'Beaver' (B151 EAV) will eventually have something ridiculous (ridonkulous?) under the bonnet...

My other 316 M10 non-sunroof has a 2.8 M50 inside currently. She's my daily.

I'm thinking AJP8 engine for the Beaver.

Apologies, mega threadjack ahoy...

You see (relatively) a lot of 60k-ish 320 autos that have had old boy owners for in and around a grand. I think you could do a lot worse tbh..... :D
