i crashed a year ago entering a dual carriage way. About 2am, greesy road, tired = my fault. Wasn't going fast but just lacked concentration.
Not too bad so gathered my bits off the road then a police car turned up. Said the car wasn't road worthy to drive so said my brother would come and tow me back. There was damage to the front but the wheels turned freely, brakes all fine, rear lights ok, etc.
Police bloke said it has to be taken on a loader either back to the house or to the police station. Asked if i had arranged one, I said no, he says "I'll sort one for you". Not having been in this situation I thought fair enough... Low loader turns up and as its going on I ask how much it was going to cost. "£300 plus VAT"!! Bearing in mind I live about 5 minutes away I thought this was a bit steep.
He then said I have to pay cash... I didn't have a card so said I'd ring up at home and pay by phone. Sorry mate, office closed. We're now at about 3.30am. Had to phone someone to bring a card out, withdraw £300, pay him and he dropped it off at the house.
Found out that for a police call out its supposed to be £150 and no VAT is payable. Complained to the police and recovery company then got the money back!
