Throws the speedo out, gives a firmer ride, more chance of buckling a rim and looks to small in the arch.

I am stuck in the 80's though! :)

I'm firmly with the old school for this one...

Was running 215/40/16 for a while and found them far too hard. Strangely the back end was also quite slippery and the whole lot felt crashy but without any discernable benefit in grip.

Switched to 205/50/16 and it feels loads better - almost like BMW intended, but with 16s!

I was planning to try to fit 225/45/16 on the rear, and many people say you can get away with it with the right spacer setup (I run 20mm spacers all around) but in the end cost killed that idea! 225/45s are SO expensive!

OK, here's the pic, and I took some measurements as well to back it up.

Image

The absolute outer edge of the tyre is 8mm beyond the extremity of the rim. The outer edge of the tread is 14mm in from the outer edge of the tread. .... And the tread is bang on 205mm wide.
I wouldn't call it stretched, it seems spot-on to me. :)
This is why I no longer drive an E30......

Cost isn't really an issue as I wont be replacing them often as the car is just a summer cruising wagon.

Wow, this may have convinced me - does look spot on.
Thanks for the pic.

Im leaning this way - though not if im going to have them machined when I can fit 205/50s and them look like Stu's.

Hmmm.
