3.64 is a good ratio for an E30 gearbox mate, the dude with the M52 must be using the ZF gearbox from an E36
Beat me to it.E30BeemerLad wrote:3.64 is a good ratio for an E30 gearbox mate, the dude with the M52 must be using the ZF gearbox from an E36

i see said the blind man...
so anyone used am m40 box with 3.64 diff in e30 24v land?
will be same ratio or close to an m42 i'd say,

i used an m40 box with a 3.64 diff with my m50.

i never maxed it out mick, i think the theoretical top speed is something like 145-150 but it might be worth double checking with an online gear ratio calculator.
the 3.64 wasn't half bad at all, a good diff for decent acceleration and a top speed.

it will definately be useable though with an m40 box. If you did want more acceleration though its not the end of the world becuase at least you can still use it for the meantime and im sure you're used to removing diffs by now with all your fragging experience

i was hoping on the lightened flywheel and a chip for that.
the 3.64 is an open one so it's only a temp measure.if i like then an lsd is next so i might see if steve will sell his 3.73 lsd if i need more acceleration.

just to clarify before i spend,to fit the m40 box i need a 320i prop and gear linkage.
will a 325i prop be no good as i have one of those?

I'm using a 325 prop, but M42 box, not sure if the dimensions of the M40 & M42 boxes are different

m40 and m42 box are the same except m42 box has synchro on reverse.
you want 320 linkage and 325 prop the 320 is slightly shorter and needs a couple of spacers putting in.
I used an m42 box on my cars and a 3.64 diff which was good for an indicated 160mph so real world 145 to 155 somewhere?
Compacts have some good diff ratio's which are a touch longer for that motorway work. All are small cases though and from experience I chewed through small case stuff in 4-5 months

Bollocks to this 24v scrap!
I'm not sure that the M40 and M42 boxes are the same rix313 had some real trouble getting his box and propshaft to fit and then found out it was an M40 box not an M42 and had to buy a new box.
I'll see if I can find it on his thread

You should never underestimate the predictability of stupidity
M42 Supercharged 285bhp + M3 6speed box
M42 box is slightly bigger than the M40
M42 box = 325 prop
M40 box = 320 prop
I had an M40 and 320 prop combo and it was perfect with a 320 gearselector bracket
