Have always wondered what the ratio of pre-facelift to facelift cars is on here - I'd guess about 70% of people have facelift cars?

Also does anyone know the production figures of pre-facelift v. facelift cars?

I've got a facelift 320i se.

According to my unofficial guide there were 106049 pre-facelift e30's sold in the uk between 1982 and 1987 versus 25699 face lift models between 1987 and 1991. Obviously that doesn't include the touring and cab models sold until 1993.

Cheers,

So...Is a 1990 M3 pre-facelft or post?
Seeing as M3s never got the external facelift of other cars....However, they also (even very early ones) never had metal bumpers.

Is a 1989 Cabrio, pre or post?
Again, Cabrios got the cosmetic facelift later than saloons...However, the engines were upgraded in line with the rest of the range in mid 87...

Sure there must be more examples of anomalies like these....

the best way to check if your car is a facelift or not is the rear lights. The big ones are facelift and the smaller flat ones are pre facelift.

Most would consider a facelifted M3 to have smileys?

I'll admit I didn't think too much about the anomalies, it was half 12 after all Image

Iain those figures are very surprising - I would've thought that it'd be about equal 8O

@ Zayann & Hyperion: M3s came with all sorts of different light fittings...Hellas were never "smiley" (only Bosch were) and they were fitted even as late as 1990...

The dash is subtly different in post facelift cars with the electric window cut-out being on the gear-stick surround part of the centre console rather than the earlier position.

The big difference in the 6 cylinder cars is the later Motronic system
In the 4cyl cars the M10 became M40 for Europe, at least...In US, they never got M40s, so US facelift cars also have M10 motors...

Confused, yet?

Of course, Cabrios got the Motronic or M40 update, together with the later interiors, but not the later type of rear lights until the very last months of production..
Tourings were only facelift....

Smileys is just what he meant ellipsoid lamps, when the E30 underwent the facelift, the M3 had the facelift headlights, going from standard light unit to ellipsoid.

Pre-Facelift. I was in the market for a 4 cyl, was told to avoid M40s, and couldnt find any 318IS's that didnt have abusive / lead-footed owners. As a result, a Pre-facelift was the only thing I could get with an M10.

Didnt like it at first, but it grows on you, much like the E30 in general.

You could get an M10 316 facelift if you looked hard enough, in the UK anyway....

Why were you told to avoid the M40? They're not that bad :?

I had said that I wanted to do some work on it after I was comfortable with the car, but nobody in Australia does particularly special M40 engines, while there are 10-15 local BMW specialists that can do M10s that are drivable up to 180bhp, and then not so driveable upwards of 210bhp, or turbo setups going north of 300bhp.

As well as that, I was told that you can be far, far harsher and more abusive of an M10 and it will basically live forever, while the M40 is a good engine but needs to be treated with alot more respect.

The look of the pre-facelift didnt bother me too much, as I like the older style tail lights alot more than the newer ones, though I do like the plastic bumpers more.

If I could have anything, I would have Mtech 1 still.
