i need a lighter fly on my 2.7....... does anyone have a stock one lying round which i can get lightened,,,, and also does anyone know where in hertfordshire i could get this done

I can't help with the spare flywheel but I can give you some names/numbers for companies that may not be too far from you and are worth making enquiries with. I have no actual knowledge of them or their work, i just dug their details out of an old copy of ppc mag I had in my office.

Possibly completely useless but; I got mine lightened in a place in Warrington (have no idea where as si316 got it done) was Ԛ£20 or so a looks like a good job.

Could always post it! It would be cheaper on the way back!

There are driveability issues to take into consideration before you do this.

The throttle response does get better but its alot harder to drive the car smoothly especially at lower speeds.

You might also get more gearbox noise at idle and a worse idle.

Atleast you know before you do this.

about 10 kg!

It's a dual mass wheel and weighs a ton! i had thought of getting mine lightened a bit too... i have a spare one sitting about doing nothing!

Fitting cost... garage will probably charge Ԛ£100 or so, only a guess! the gearbox needs to be taken out, and if it's the original clutch you might want to think of changing it for a Sachs unit, so much better than the original BMW one!

iv been qoted 65 for fittment roughly
20 for flywheel
not so bad, is it worth it tho

I would wait until you need to replace the clutch or at least until you need to take the gear box out.

Whilst it's out replace any leaky oil seals like the crank and input shaft seals.

I'm not to sure but i don't think you can lighten a dual mass fly wheel, can any one confirm this ??

M42 have different flywheels i think, if you get one from a newer (i ithink) model it will be lighter from factory. Check out Brendan Percels website.

yeah i know they have dual mass ones, hence why i want to get it lightened someone mentioned that it cannot be though?

i also heard that m40 ones are a direct swap allegedly

I think there are two types of flywheels for the m42, one lighter than the other.

From analysing the BMW ETK, I have found out that '89 models were fitted with the M40 9.973kg flywheel but were changed to a 11.45kg (aircon) or 12.25kg (no aircon) from 1990! Here's another tip - BMW have recognised a potential momentary power reduction after a gear change followed by full throttle - due to partial contraction of the air intake boot. A support ring, p/n 13 71 1 734 359 can be installed at the first pleat in the boot! This seems to be a US only part though...
