im not sure about legality in ireland
as for emissions obviosuly it would probably fail an MOT
i imagien a bit of power would be gianed from it tho, as for the job in hand iv no idea
all i can advise is that u dont go 2 quick fit!

Agreed !!!!318-is wrote:luckily yes
it was august 92 the law came in i believe
Emissions
Vehicles must meet European emissions standards. Please note that petrol-fuelled cars manufactured after August 1992 are required to meet standards that can currently only be achieved by a catalytic converter.
anyone know if theres a decent cheap decat pipe available ie from supersprint or any other manufacturer ?
had an alfa 156 before my 91 318is and the cat went on that(honeycomb disintegrated and ended up in the back box) cleared the honeycomb out and drove for a couple of months like that..the only problem was the nasty rasp the exhaust gave off due to gas expansion in the empty cat, eventually had a 'csc dummy cat' made and shipped over from italy, it had a built in silencer. sorted the awful resonance, nicer exhaust note than standard and a bit more response on the throttle. Ԛ£120. and as the car had two pre cats it still passed its mot no probs. but that was then..anyone else decatted their 318is got suggestions? any resonance problems etc..
cheers

I bet your 318iS doesn't have a CAT, check under the battery tray there is a connector there. If its blanked off then you don't have a cat/lambda sensor fitted. If it does have wiring running down to the lambda sensor then you do have a cat.....
Everyone seems to think they have a CAT on the 318iS, I've said it before, but if you do actually have one then I'll give you a prize! who in there right mind would tick the CAT option box when given the choice???
The front box is just a resonator

Lads, just get some stainless/mild steel pipe the same diameter as your exhaust, two flanges to match the ones already on the cat, get the pipe cut to lenght, weld on the flanges remove the cat, bolt in the kat replacement piece, job done. then when your going for an MOT just do the swap. cheap and easy. while we're on the subject, i new a guy driving a FIAT Punto, he failed the MOT on emissions, then he took the cat out went back re-tested and passed the f***ing MOT.

my car looks like tit has cat cold this be resonator? it has sensor too?
I think the iS has an all-in-one Cat and front box, but I could be wrong.
If you have the Lambda sensor (wire going to the exhaust) its likely you have a Cat, but not always.
Normally I would say, get rid of the Cat and leave the Lambda sensor in place, although Ive been told on here you can dump the sensor as well, as the ECU can run both open and closed loop. That was for the M20 engine though, so the M42 might be different, ie if you remove the sensor you need a non-Cat ECU - that will need confirming by the 318iS experts on here.
IMO I would remove the Cat if you car is registered pre August 1992 and leave the sensor in place as its there for a reason.
I did remove the Cat on my Oct 1992 registered Cav SRi and that passed a couple MOTs with no problems before I sold it.

If you've got a wire going to the exhaust then yes you do have a CAT... like i said never seen one fitted before! the front resonator does look like a 'typical' CAT of sorts, that's why so many people think they have one fitted.
looking at the ETK, it doesn't list a different ECU for CAT equipped cars, disconnect the lambda sensor and see what happens!

just be careful with this, most people forget that just because your car has passed its MOT, doesn't mean your insurance company will take a liking to you 'modifying' things. The insurance is on the basis of having a valid MOT certificate, if on inspection the MOT does not represent the car's current config. then you'll be in trouble if it came to that after a serious inspectionBig_M_ wrote:Lads, just get some stainless/mild steel pipe the same diameter as your exhaust, two flanges to match the ones already on the cat, get the pipe cut to lenght, weld on the flanges remove the cat, bolt in the kat replacement piece, job done. then when your going for an MOT just do the swap. cheap and easy. while we're on the subject, i new a guy driving a FIAT Punto, he failed the MOT on emissions, then he took the cat out went back re-tested and passed the f***ing MOT.![]()
same applies to any mod though even changing wheels, lowering kits, induction etc, etc. its just a risk we take. rules are made to be broken well insurance ones anyway so long as you get away with it, besides if you get the cat back pipe made to look original then the inspector would have to be a zoner to know the differance, lol
when i dectat'd my alfa one of the potential issues was the ecu over fueling due to the lambda providing inconsitant emissions info, was advised to have the chip remapped. could removing the cat and or lambda on a 318is cause any specific or similar probs that anyone may be aware of?
