well, after finally getting round to having the convertible towed to a mate's garage to see what the non-starting problem was and him fixing it (a "burn" in the ECU and the oldest petrol he has ever seen (the petrol that was in it when i collected it from someone's drive where it had sat for ?? years :o:), oh and the dud battery), i spent a few hours this weekend on the old girl:

emptied the boot of loads of accumulated "that'll come in handy" E30 bits and pieces, stripped the lights, carpets, balance weight and cover, plastic rear panel trim, boot seal and number plate lights:

Image
Image
Image
Image

then treated any rusty spots (two or three tiny areas) and the inner wheel arches and seams with liberal doses of Firtan (see patches of it where it has run right out of the drain holes, behind rear wheels in first pic), before spraying the arches, seams, bolt holes, rear light apertures and also the number plate light areas from inside and outside the boot with Holts rust-proofing underseal:

Image
Image

then the area hidden by the rear bumper:

Image

original rear and replacement number plate lights ready to be cleaned:

Image

refurbed chrome rear bumper, although i did have to replace the rubber strip as this one was scuffed a bit more than i liked, then fit new mounting brackets:

Image

give the inside a good squirt of Holts:

Image

and on the outside, under the rubber:

Image

and all back together she goes:

Image
Image

a good "scratch-remove" , T-Cut, polish and wax later, looking much better than she did on Saturday morning:

Image

then took TPS for a drive to Southsea seafront in the Baur, to buy him an ice-cream (if i hear "are we there yet" one more time.. :cursin:).
very pleased with my weekend's work (the garden will just have to wait! :snigger:)

will update soon...

cheers boys.
yes Imy, i had two until the Brilliant red one went to meet it's maker last week. this one's not a minter, not yet anyway winkeye , pics will follow in time as the work gets done.

sorry Steve, but it's the only colour to have...Dolphin Grey, as my Sport. got a couple of bootlids in that colour though

enough from you ice-cream muncher!

do it Mo, looks the business imo

cheers Dan

thanks Paul. yes, that's the one. seats to be fed reconditioned by Iain soon.

cheers maddog, nice sig pic car too :)

after work today: i removed the rear springs, bloody lowered things! couldn't get under the car to inspect anything, had to lift it at the wheel arch every time to try to get the jack under at the same time, grounded the exhaust on every speed bump, etc. etc. :cheese:

standard springs FTW!! i took the opportunity to clean and rust-kill the rear arms and shock absorbers. the wheel arches were a bit muddy, so gave them a good wipe, and there were only two tiny areas of rust where the factory underseal had started to come away, so treated them and put everything back together.
tomorrow, i shall do the same with the front springs. pics to follow chaps :)

forgot to ask last time, anyone know what this is? i remember taking from a scrappy conv. boot, but can't remember where it goes. in the "wells" somewhere :? :

Image

anyway, on to tonight's fun in the drizzle:

wheels off, ready to remove front legs:

Image

legs off to reveal rusty track rods and wishbones, but the arches themselves were surprisingly rust-free:

Image

wire-brush then slap on the "rust-kill". it dries black and a bit glossy, so looks ok when cured :

Image

replacement leg with standard spring fitted. brake back plate wire-brushed and "rust-killed" too. the caliper needed a quick brush, that's all. the brake discs were quite thin, so refitted the original discs, which had a tiny lip on the outer edge, but nothing really (with the original pads too obviously). :

Image

if i wanted to be really fussy, i could have rubbed down and painted the legs, wishbones and track-rods and cleaned & undersealed the wheel arches, but it's just to get it at a workable height and safe for the MOT at this stage. all the "tarty" stuff can wait until the Spring now i think, along with front wing removal to really do a proper rust-killing and waxoyling/undersealing job.

wheels back on and at a better height IMO. i can get the jack under the sill with out having to lift the car myself first! :woohoo: it is going to be fitted with 16" genuine Alpinas also:

Image

the removed suspension. guesses estimate 30mm drop:

well, i spent a couple of hours refitting the fogs, changing the wheels to 16s, getting the w/washers, rear fogs and horn to work ready for the MOT today, then off i drove towards the garage.
drove onto the sliproad to the motorway, accelerated and......shake shake judder judder  :wtf: :cheese:

limped to the next slip road, thankfully just a couple of hundred yards and came home. phoned up and cancelled the MOT

initially i thought i had a total flat but checked the tyres and wheels and all seemed ok.
something wrong with the prop maybe :?

i initially thought wheels Andrew, but all seem ok, sbut shall refit the 14s just to be 100%.

Gaszman has first dibs on them John. if not, then i'll let you know.

i shall check tomorrow paul, but, of course, i done everything up as it should be after fitting the 2.7, erm..i'm sure i erm...did.

just had a chat with Gaszman and Bassboy and they think it's the propshaft centre bearing (speaking from experience), so could be that.

blimey, which one? :?

had a chance to have a look at the convertible the other day and yes, it was a prop problem.
i jacked her up, removed the complete exhaust and heat shields and started at the front. all seemed ok there, then the centre support/bearing, all seemed ok, then the prop to diff flange.... 8O where's my nuts?? i just can't belieeeeve it. is nothing safe? why would anyone would steal four prop nuts.
Z3I wrote:Might be just a bolt or 2 left undone..prop shaft..easily missed??
as if...what a silly thing to say

i told that Gaszman to make sure they were done up nice and tight!

:o: :o: :o:

anyway, replaced the nuts (which someone DEFINITELY MUST have stolen) and back on with the heat shields and exhaust and fired her up.
TPS jumped in the passenger seat and we crawled out of my driveway and pootled off down the road at speeds up to 30mph. all seemed ok so far...sod it, lets have a blast down the motorway winkeye
got on the slip road and foot down. heeeere we go, hold on Phil :snigger:
poweeerrr! my god, this 2.7 shifts. it feels sooo much quicker than my trusty old four-pot touring. sweet as a nut :woohoo:
