The thing attached to number one plug lead can be cut off and thrown away. It's only required for dealer diagnostics.

The bit with a 2pin plug on the end that goes around the front of the engine and into a socket under the diagnostic connector.

I wouldnt cut that wire if i were you, my dad had an e30 years ago that started to run rough and it turned out that this wire had broken off the ignition lead.

Fitted a new one and it ran fine.

Cheers,

what ever you do , don't ! i said don't cut that wire !! it would just equal throuwing the loom away after having bought it new.

so , this wire , is not just diag, it controls your ignition on the motronic version....cut it the car wount run ! ; if it does you might result in pinging, to much advance ... and it all run all injectors at the same time ...making extra consumption....

the first pics is for the version with the ignition on the camshaft...i mean the motronic then...

the second is for the ljetronic type 1 with the distirbutor cap aside the bloc and mounted on the oil pump axle...

cheers

My Motronic wiring diagram shows the pick up on ignition lead 1 as only going to the diagnostic plug, BUT, I just went out to the workshop and had a look at a partly stripped loom from a 89 320i, and the lead in question goes all the way to the ECU, so I think I will retract my advice to chop it, as on some versions of Motronic it looks like it may have important functions after all. There's always something new to learn.

This lead cured a rough running problem on my old 316i too, I spent loads changing various things and all it was was this lead.

on the late model of motronic that leads tels the ECU what injtecor to run as it detects when the 1rst ignition wire recieves the curent...if its not plug in in most cases it would only result in getting all the injectors to flow at the same time , meaning less milage and wrong mixture...so less power and bad idling.
it also controls whan the exact moment the spark is made to get on spot the correct timing...if it of , after a while, a bad ecu with a unpluged lead can cause the enging to ping....

my little evening contribution...
