visual diffference in m42 and m44 is engine

im going to look at a crashed compact tonight to see what engine its got,hopefully to use as a donor for my touring.whats the easy way to identify the difference with the engine in situ,car has been debadged and the owner isnt about so i can see the logbook,if its the right engine i cant afford to let someone else get it!

That's an M44. The most obvious difference is the inlet manifold.

no,by all accounts fitting the 1.9 m44 is much more of a headache,theres a thread with an explanation of the wiring differences i saw while i was reading around earlier

The M42's were fitted with thos manifolds too so that doesn't distinguish them.

The main way to tell is the M44 takes its crank position reading from the back of the crank (near the gearbox). The sensor is located in the N/S of the engine under the starter motor. Best way to check is to see whether or not the aux belt pulley wheel on the front has trigger teeth and whether there is a crank position sensor underneath the lower water pipe on the O/S of the engine bay.

I don't know why the M44 is more difficult to fit than the M42 from an E36, it seems to be just internet myth as I've never seen concrete proof of the problems, just 'heard' about it.
