i'm looking forward to having a quiet engine.

What is the difference between m42 & m44?
Ive got an m44 in my compact ti, ive heard they are more torquey low down, something to do with the inlet mani

Ive just thought magpie, will you need the ews gubbins to make it run or will it run with the m42 management.
Probably have to swap the sump too

2.) Not really. I've never driven a 1.9Ti Compact that goes any better than my 1.8. A bit more torque, no extra bhp but better economy - and that's marginal. The only real advantage is that they're newer.
the work involved for a straight swap into an e30is is only swap
sump and pick up pipe,p/s pump & bracket,loom,and the inlet manifold.
not hard if you have an is to start with.

The M44 is a lot more work that just a sump and a manifold. The M44 management with the AFM would be a lot of work to mate to an E30 car loom. Not impossible, but still not easy. If you can do that, you don't need to change the inlet manifold.
To use the existing M42 loom and ECU would be a serious amount of work. The M44 cam sensor will not work with the M42 loom. Fit an M42 sensor? You can't because the upper timing cover is different, the hole for the sensor is a different diamer and in the wrong place. The M44 cam sensor is all different too and is a trigger ring and not just a lug on the inlet cam sprocket. There are also two threaded holes in the head for the two coolant sensors, and only one of the M44.
I could go on, but at the end of the day fitting an M44 into an E30 is not easy and is basically a waste of time.

i am a big fan of the m42 and m44 engines read alot about them last year, the m42 is the "stronger engine" of the 2 as it has a forged bottom end where the m44 is not, bmw did improve the m42 with the m44 but pepole have said that if it had been forged like the m42 and had a less restrictive intake could have made more torque and better power up in the rev range. if i can find the sites i read the info on i will post the links.

Yes, they are better. They have all the same screamy top end, more torque, better mpg, and the same bulletproof reliability. I have been a big fan of the M42 for years and the M44 beats it in every respect.leeparkes wrote:Can the M44 be used in the e30? are they better than M42?

Apprently the later M42 (from the E36 318is) goes in without too much trouble. This engine also has a nice extra bit of torque and mpg.
I've never driven a 24v E30. I can imagine that would be the ultimate. I have a 328i E36 and love it. Light engine too. How is the traction?
