Unfortunately with new emission regulations, low capacity turbocharged engines will become the norm I think. Doesn't really fit with BMW image though...

With today's engine building standards, and BMW being one of the best, it shouldn't be noticeable that there is one (or three) cylinders missing.

its the furutre, Small Capacity Turbo charged engines

the fiat 500 is getting a 2cyliner 900cc turbo charged engine

the new alfa romeo Mito allready has this new " multi air engine", The power figures are quite a shock too

i think the alfa's is a 1.4 2cyl, the cloverleaf 1.4 produces 170bhp 8O

the standard one produces 135bp

the thing with bmw if they do go down that route is they have got to change the model designition in my opinion

125i = a 1.8, i expect a 2.5 straight 6 :roll:

Tis easier to balance a 3cyl than a 4cyl as you only need the one balancer shaft.

With a 4cyl, you need two and they need to spin at double the speed of the crank....or you can just not bother which is what most manufacturers seem to do.

Wish they'd make a 1.2litre straight 6 with some turbos. THAT would be cool!

VW and Vauxhall are not doing too well with 3 cylinder engines, more to the point 3 cylinder chain driven engines :)

Some very relevent comments there. In particular.....
I squirm at the thought of an i4 in a BMW, much less an i3!
I fail to see how adding small engines to a car that is at least 1000 lbs too heavy is actually going to fix anything.
This is why I no longer drive an E30......
