Always an interesting topic this one !! Ive had many cars and bikes over the years, and this scenario often crops up. The bottom line is as Kos and others have pointed out is that if you transfer the ID to another shell then its a ringer !!

Im sure many other car make owners are doing similar rebuilds and restores using the same method. .

The daft thing is that if you buy a "heritage" shell for an MG or old mini etc then its totally legal to transfer the ID, same with Land Rovers if its a brand new chassis. But not the case if using
a good solid second hand chassis.

The question also arises , even its a new shell or chassis , then does the original status or model still remain?? I think this was raised a while back in the rather heated topic about
Felixs Alpina which had been reshelled , therefore was it actually still an Alpina or not !!

As for changing engines, thats got daft aswell . Got a friend whos got a 90cc Vespa and has
put a 50cc engine in for his lad, and DVLA want proof or dealer letter /engineer report etc that it has been reduced in engine size before re sending V5 back to them ..

Brians logic works for me. Fix or repair one bit, then another , and another, and some more etc etc, just like Triggers Broom !!!

But not if you transfer another shell to the ID; especially if you do it bit by bit!

thats like saying " it was the bullit that killed him, and not me even though i pulled the trigger" in the eyes of the law its not legal.

ultimately, it depends how bad the shell is. no one actually knows at this time.

i'm sure that if some one stockpiled shells and sold them legitimately they can be sold with out ID's and that would make the whole re shell saga easier to stomach with potential sellers/buyers

i can see any future buyer being put off buy a re shelled car, i know i would be.

is the OP going to have the cars in the same original colour, correct spec and fit things back in like the black headlining? if the jobs done right then thats fine, but it mat still be easier to repair the rusty areas, but we dont know yet

I've seen much, much worse restored. No need for a re-shell.

Check this resto out
