Now then people I have a couple of questions if anyone could help about carrying out an engine swap from 2.0 too 2.5 in my 89 e30. I have purchased the engine, told it was an 89 sport engine, it arrived today, was told it will go straight in, run on the existing ecu and everything! Thought this a wee bit strange but i believed them! Stupid?? Had a quick look tonight, the only difference i can see between them is the fact the oil filter housing has holes for 2 unions on it, possibly for an oil cooler? Mine does not have one of those!! So, is this the only difference, or have i been led up the garden path big stylee!?

That is basically the only differance, excepth the 2.5 has a different inlet manifold etc... but you did not say what you got with the engine.
It will just plug and play, and you could use the oil filter housing from the 320 engine rather than fitting an oil cooler. You will want to put a 2.5 chip in the ecu though. If the engine had the engine loom it will just plug in to the plug on the bulk head.

Actually it will be a 2.5 if it has oil cooler holes, none of the 320's had them.

Sport Ecu is the same as the 2.5 and 2.0 ltr one they just have different chips. If I was you I'd just get a chip off and and put it in the 2.0 ecu. Try chips@e30zone.co.uk Ԛ£55 for a chip I got the wild one and it's ace!

this sport engine crapis bollux can anyone actually point out a difference between the sport engine and a normal 325 nope cos there is none
right if you got the engine you will also need the ecu loom inlet thrrotle body etc to do it and idealy the oil cooler
you can run the 325 without one but if you do drivethe car hard id recomend that its there seen to may engine die without it hell i can even kill them with it lol

The runners are also slightly different shapes as the 320 ones have smaller ID's

Are both engines are either early or late? (early ECU's have 2 rows of pins, late (post 88 ) have 3 rows.)

Cheers for the info boys, it was invalueble! Got the engine in no problem, found the replacement engine to have a major oil leak from the sump unfortunately! The only problem i had was the throttle body was too larger diameter for the induction pipe from the air box, need to get one of those this week, runs well sweet!!
