So, this winter I will mainly be sorting out the rear end on the old girl.

I've been running a 3:64 open diff now (in place of the original 3:73) for about the last 4 years. I like the ratio of the 64 especially with the newly installed 2.7. However, I've just aquired a very nice 3:64 LSD on the zinnobar turd Simon and I are currently breaking.

I knew the front to rear brake line and the fuel lines were starting tom scab, the brake flexibles above the diff look shite and that the metal brake pipes in all the rear end area were tatty. Add all that to the fact that Barry kindly informed me the rear beam bushes were passed there best at the MOT in Aug, I felt it was about time I brought the rear end up to the same standard as the rest of the car.

Back in winter 06-07 I refurbed the suspension using new shocks top mounts, Motorsport springs, drop links etc. But this times it's getting personal. I hate getting dirty working on my cars :o:

So here goes, the first installment of no doubt many and Barrys already running the prices on a shed load of parts (thanks mate).

Heres how I found the car today once the covers were off.

Image

soon had its arse up in the air and the stripping started.

Heres how it all is under there now. Still looks good after the last refurb but I'm going deep this time.

Barry, I may be losing it  . The garden and the general upkeep of the house is now just to much for mum. It'll break my heart but once this jobs out the way, the cars about done!

Unless I buy the 1983 628cs I saw on the way home 8O

Graeme, what I did last time has stayed nice TBO, but the rest is f*cking minging. It's a disgrace luvvy!
Everytime I pull the covers off over the winter, I just fall in love with it again. I fitted a minty mint Tech 1 steering wheel today which is as new. Has improved the interior even more :D

Glad you got the new Tech 1 on, know you've been after that for a while. Looking forward to following the thread. If you ever need an extra pair of hands I would love the experience.

I may take you up on that. Dropping the fuel tank out I am not looking forward to.

I suppose the next steps are exhaust off, belly pans and prop out. drop the tank out and then I need Barry over there to whip his tool out 8O for the rear bushes. I can be dealing with the rear arms in the mean time.

List of parts required so far are

Front to rear brake pipe
Front to rear fuel pipes
The 4 steel lines at the rear
The 2 flexibles above the diff
Handbrake shoes
LSD
Diff mount
Beam bushes
Trailing arm bushes

and anything else I stumble upon.

The rear discs and pads are recent, as are the shocks, top mounts, ARB mounts brackets and drop links so that'll keep the cost down a touch this time :D

the first of many winter "rear end" rebuilds! That rear brake pipe T is going to need some heat to get that out. Horrid job. Last bit left Trev for the finish line really, nothing else it really wants for to be 100% inside and out. Proper car

Dreading it. I've doused it in wd40 to give it a chance.

Heat gun you reckon?

some WD and a bit of heat and she'll probably go. I've cut the bolt head off before with a grinder and mole gripped the thread out. It'll be fine and 40 times easier if you do all that with the beam and petrol tank all removed like you want to do anyhow

Chris Plummer in Aldershot, £120, unless you are going to extent that Trevor is going to and doing a full rear end rebuild it makes sense to get someone to do it for you and Chris Plummer is a BMW specialist with years of dealer experience.

I doubt that the brakeline three way will be much of a problem to you, mine was far worse than that and unfastened with only a soak of WD40.Use a nice shiny stainless steel bolt on the way back!
Likewise petrol tank is just arkward, suck it's contents out via the holes at the top,I use an oil syringe,to reduce the wieght, soak the five fixings and down it comes.
You are unlikely to find the tops of the rear beam bushes corroded to the frame of the car as well, must be a joy to work on one so clean underneath!
Bet you wear white overalls and they stay clean.... winkeye

As Si said the first of many rear end rebuilds! Bought all the parts for mine about a month ago, all new nuts, bolts, washers pipes, back plates, brackets etc etc came to just under £200 including my discount.
I look forward to your pics as I can follow them when doing mine over Christmas! :P

Does look stunning under there at the mo, what underseal is it?

Not white no. But with the vast majority of the car i rarely get my hands dirty, never need industrial hand cleaner. winkeye . However, as Si and Henry will confirm, during the summer months it gets a good seeing to when it's out. It's no trailer queen, I've been consious not to be like that with it. I just like to see originality and cleanliness. I hate it when someone say does an engine transplant and doesn't even degrease the new lump before it goes in :x
Chris Plummer is a BMW specialist with years of dealer experience.
and this car saw him loads of times in the late 90's. A testament to his work I'd say.

It's factory, really thick as well. It is very dirty though and some plum has sprayed horrible thick black waxoil all over the place (except in the important areas  ). It's taken me 4 years to get rid of it all and I'm still coming across it. Before it all goes back in I will be "dusting" the underside with a light mist of clear waxoil or similar, just to repel the water.
Your cabby is just stunning, is it original paint ?
90% yes. When I bought it, it had a few scabby stone chips all around below the rubbing strips and i had to let an inch of steel into the nearside rear arch but hat was it. I painted all below the bumpers and rubbing strips about 4 years ago.Apart from that it's as it came out the factory. It's been over polished over the years and the paint is a touch thin now in places but I'd rather that than blow £4k on paint only for it to get chipped. Like i say, it's no trailer queen.

I wash it with a sponge, use a chamois leather and just autoglym ultra deep shine wax. OOOOOOh here come the 2 buckets and a microfibre brigade! What a load of old b0ll0cks.

I used a jack with 2 blocks of wood under the diff. You wouldn't want to be under there for long before the stand go under 8O . They are placed exactly on the rear jacking points leaving the rear beam free to work on.

Little update. Barry BSS325i rang me today with the good news that the parts are in.

The bad news was the battery I wanted to finish the engine bay is now supplied in black  .
he sensed my disappointment and rang me back within a few minutes to tell me they'd search the stocks and found a white one in stock in Worthing! HAPPY days and thanks Barry.

I gained a set of brand new genuine steel brake pipes for the rear trailing arms on buying the red shitter Si and I broke. Good news is that they are the correct green colour as well cos they are on show. The pipes BMW now supply are black :x .
The front to rear brake pipe on the red car was also brand new and obviously pre bent, So si took that for his resto and gave me a brand new front to rear untouched, unbent item he'd just bought. We did do well out of that car!
I also have a a set of OEM trailing arm bushes coutesy of Harry (Barrymate) who was supplied twice as many than he needed :D

Good job I have that lot cos the following alone came to £181 with discount (thanks again to Bazlaaaaa).

So heres said selection of parts that Barry dropped into mine this evening.

The two steel fuel lines
The two steel brake pipes above the diff
New Tee peice
Two new beam bushes
and a genuine WHITE BMW battery that will cease Pacerpete taking the piss everytime I open the bonnet

Image

Image

Plus sat on my bench I have a nice tight 3:64 LSD out of the red car that I'm obviously going to brush up and get looking decent.

More soon!
