I would imagine that the m21 pickup is used so that it reaches deeper into the deeper oil pan on the modified sump, which in itself helps negate the problem of the oil climbing the sidewall of the standard sump and starving the pickup of a suitable supply.
Err, that's the oil cooler thermostat. . . oil pressure releif valve is only accessible with the sump off.

I've always read that it was the pressure relief valve, oh well, learn somthing new everyday :D

parts 14 through 17 relate to the pressure relief valve assembly, the spring is (15) a different part number than the m21's

Well there you go, so I assume you could just change the spring then rather than finding a complete m21 pump? or are they different externally as well?

I've checked through the part numbers, very little matches, notably the important oil pump gear wheels.

But I would bet that the stock pump with the m21 spring would be a sound upgrade if the sumps off. I wouldn't try the spring alone without a permanent oil pressure gauge to keep an eye on things, and I would also put 0w(cold winter viscosity)/40(hot oil viscosity) to give the pump an easier life with cold thick oil.

on a seperate note - The spring is used with the thermostat to maintain oil pressure when diverting to the oil cooler IIRC

That may be where everyone gets confused then.

At least we have kept his thread at the top and I have learnt something new.

Oil pumps have nothing to do with oil starvation directly, starvation occures when there oil pump pickup has no oil to suck on or too much oil pressure and turns the oil into a frothy coffee.

Adding 'wings' alone to a sump just provides a nice large area for the oil swish into away from the oil pickup causing same problem again sucking on nothing. The way to get around it is to fit an oil scraper to girdle bottom of the block and carefully create baffles in the sump pan in such a way oil to keep most of it around the pickup from all directions. With wings, baffles and scraper you can safely increase oil capacity and use the correct oil grade for the E30 as always.

Also note the sump is very porous ali welding it needs to be thoroughly cleaned at a machine shop otherwise the welds will fail! Or use the dishwasher if you like to winding up like your misses

All a crank scraper does though, is eliminate windage. While eliminating this is a good thing, the engines ability to draw oil isn't affected either way.
