I assume so...
Put your foot on the gas in neutral (at normal operating temperature) and see!
I found mine at 6250 ish

Yes, it's about 6800rpm I think. You shouldn't have trouble finding it if you keep your foot down...
Edit.. 6800-ish with a chip!

I would do it in second, while driving along, rather than in neutral where there is no load on the engine.
Or hit the limiter in fifth like I did on Sunday!

If you rev the engine to the maximum limit stationary you will destroy the engine quickly as there is no counterballence to the engine from the prop.

Definitely advisable to try that under load in 2nd rather than free revving.
Not sure what the actual figure is on mine but it's just into the red on the rev counter. About 6,500-6,600

just one silly question. will it "hurt" your engine if you keep hitting the limiter, considering the age of our cars engines. I only hit my limiter once in 2nd before.

Well you have to be revving the nuts off it which is the killer of all engines! Friction, and therefore wear is proportional to the square of engine speed as is the energy in each piston at TDC..
Basically more revs = more likely to break (we knew that!)
Spose when you hit the limiter you introduce a step-change in power. It's these high transients that break stuff. The limiter on my 318is seems quite 'soft' so it's not too bad.
Is it a fuel cut or ignition cut limiter?
The stroke on the M42 engine is very short - hence the free revving nature. To hazard a guess I'd say unless the con-rod bolts or gudgeon pin are pig weak, a limiter of 6K (ish) protects you way more than enough..If I'm wrong I'm gonna be doing that engine swap sooner than later

I used to hit the 6500rpm limiter a lot in my 323i when racing because it was still pulling ok and I didn't realise. Aslo with the gear ratios not right for most of the tracks I go to I often ran out of revs in the middle of a corner. Since I got the standalone EMS fitted with the soft cutout at about 6550rpm and hard at 6600rpm I haven't hit either. The power band seems to have changed and it doesn't pull as hard up high anymore, I think I change around 6000rpm now.

I think people instinctively change when they 'feel' it's right. That's why I hit my 318is limiter so often and I haven't in previous cars. I recon BMW were too conservative with it and put it right where the engine is making torque and therefore right where it's least bloody needed!
