M20b25 rad works fine and never overheated even stuck in traffic on hot days but the fan will be on a lot more than if your using e34/28 ect...

Yeah noticed you used the m20 rad for a bit.
Did you use the electric air con fan from the e34?

I had difficulty in pulling the pins out, so safer for me rather than demaging the connector.

X2, tried for a good hour to get them out. Gave up out of fear of breaking connector.

I tested pulling the wires out on an old m20 loom i had up the shed, pulled the wire so hard to get it out it stretched about an inch and the pin didnt budge.

hi there... ive just bought a half finshed project of an e30 with the 3.5 fitted.. was wonderin if you could help me with a few problems.. first is the engine mounts, i see you bought yours from a place called beefy do you have a number for these people? second is gear linkage i saw that you bought some kind of short shifter? is this something i need, the fella i bought it from said i would need to get the oringal one cut an shortened. and thrid is the rad i do have the oringal one still but is there a better one i can fit..

sorry to bombard you with these qusetions but from your tread seems as you know wat your doin lol

cheers

beefy is a member on here, send a PM to him via this forum.

the standard shifter will fit but a 1.9 Z3 one (about £25 new from BMW iirc) will provide a nicer feel and shorter shift stroke

the best rad to fit is a E28 535i one, it's wider, deeper but thinner than most others

there's a M30 conversion guide sticked on here, along with a list of some of out project threads, well worth a read. if i was you, i'd start another thread with some pice etc and we'll all give you a hand sussing it all out :D

The E34 linkage would need to be shortened when fitted to an E30, or the gearlever comes out too far back.

An E30 325i linkage fits to the E34 M30 gearbox and the length is correct.

Welcome, by the way! :D

Welcome

The mounts can be brought from beefy on here but recently ive heard people finding it hard to get in touch with him amongst other issues, you could also get de. mounts from Germany

Gearstick/shifter, use the one off an M20/b25 (325i) fits perfect although mine is slightly more forward in the hole in the tunnel, only about 10mm

Radiator, i used the M20 one when i first done the swap and it coped surprisingly well even in hot weather and traffic but since having the bigger e28 535i rad the fan isnt on much at all now.

I'm using those too, and paid about that also.
Tino is good, but the pound to euro exchange rate hasn't been good for quite a while now! :?

The 325i system works but its the E30 M3 system you need with twin 50mm bores.

if you find a M3 system (the same bore as the original M30 system, the others are all smaller) pm me your email address and i'll send you over a CAD drawing of the mating flange to weld to the downpipes. it'll be a doddle to do then, just fit the downpipes, offer the exhaust up, mark the downpipes, chop them to the right length and weld the flange on, hey presto etc :D

whatever you do, don't get to this stage without starting it. every M30 needs to be fired up at least once with just the manifolds on, it's an unwritten law :D

It sure is Gareth!

The first time I stared my M30, with no pipes of course, my next door neighbour came rushing out thinking that someone was stealing his Harley! :D

He then told me that my car sounded great and asked; "You're not putting an exhaust on that, are you..?"

My neighbours are coool! 8)

Is this the scorpion off pacerpete? if so i was going to buy that but he wouldn't post it (needed splitting in two) DTM pipes i think.

i sleeved my M3 exhaust on, cut the downpipes near the gearbox mount, line the exhaust up then cut it about 80mm proud of the downpipes then opened them up to 50mm and slid the exhaust onto the downpipes then clamped it up, Job done.

Did you say Gareth that when using the M3 flange it interferes with the lollipop bush mount?

it's tight, i had to massage the downpipe a little with a percussion adjuster (hammer) but to be fair, my exhaust system was bent to hell when i bought it as it came from this:

yeah that s the one... got it for a good price, good over the moon bout it being dtm but im thinking that cutin the ends off might have to happen.. im not gunna start fitting all the parts till they arrive so should be all here by this weekend.

now the new task is 60mm lowering springs, some 15" rimage and two front seats (buckets) thinking this may be more fun on a track sideways lol :D

It will be more like 70mm springs once the M30's in there, mine gained 69kg over an M20 and it droped about 15mm at the front

Looks wicked but it dont like speedhumps (or gutters) my tech-2 valence is battered since ive had the M30 in :)

M30 + coilovers = happy gareth! :D
500lb springs on mine up front and they don't feel that hard suprisingly, guess it's the extra weight. 500lb springs on a 4 pot would knock your fillings out!

its not really gunna be driven as a road car... as i drive my work van mainly and have a e46 bmw touring that the other half use's.. so really its gunna be parked in the garage till the santa pod drift track day comes up or i fancy goin a little sideways to pick up a pint of milk..

plus for wat the car will owe me done it wont matter :D

it'll be little fun bouncing off the bump stops. the legendary "understeering M30's" are in my opinion E30's that have run out of spring travel. mine goes in a straight line rather well once the front wheels are off the ground 8O with stiffer springs and no coil binding / bump stop issues, it doesn't suffer.

imo, DIY coilovers are a minimum for a M30 to handle properly. i've had various springs and shocks on mine and only now it's on ledas does it really behave itself
