True, but check the history of the m52 for the nickasil recall issue having been dealt with and you have nout to worry about. I knew I had seen 528s and assumed e34's came with them as well.

I would call 'broker king' before you got all excited. You'll probably find when you tell them you want to put a bigger engine in there that they'll cancel the quote or something. Sticking up a quote for a 'non standard engine' makes zero sense, as you'd pay exactly the same on a M40 lump from a 316i or a 8.3L Lump from a Viper, it'd all be the same price!

I thought 'proper' insurance companies did most of the calculations based on the car that the engine is coming from?

So you're looking for an E34 that's run over a cow?

Good luck with the insurance, I'm about to renew mine and I hate all the ringing around. As mentioned above I find with any modifications it's best to call them.

There's no shortcut - spend a day on the phone talking to specialist insurers and brokers, detailing exactly what you want to do and then you'll know for sure what's feasible and what isn't. No-one on here is going to be able to tell you if it's do-able for exactly your circumstances, you'll only know by getting the quotes.

I would have thought you'd need to insure it as a second car to get something even close to a reasonable budget - insurers charge a lot for commuting, don't ask me why, they just do.

That isn't a problem anymore as they have either died, replaced or survived.

Alex, forget any of the price comparison sites, they rely on too many general assumptions and when you actually follow up the quotes to take out the policy you will probably find all sorts of issues and the price could double or they will not cover you.

As already said, get on the phone to brokers like Adrian Flux, Greenlight, HIC, Graham Sykes, Lancaster, Sky, etc etc, these guys do a lot of stuff the old skool way of using ratings tables and actually phone through to the underwriters and discuss your circumstances.

If you come across as being a genuine enthusiast who is going to have done the work yourself, they take this on board (using the notion that a young lad who has poured his own money and countless hours into a project is not going to spank the car around the first lamp post) rather than a spoilt cheque book modder.

I'm really liking your idea. 192BHP BMW straight six with no cambelt to worry about in your solid IS shell sounds like a great idea. Nearly as economilcal as a IS as well.

Wouldn't you have to change you suspension to 6cyl setup as well and also the diff.

as far as i'am asware the IS has the larger struts and discs all round

diff will need changing as you say, thinking about either a 3.73 or 3.63

my mums partner recons he gets the same if not better mpg out of his 525i that his 316i m40 8)

as long as you dont have it in vanos

If you ask me really nicely and PM me your email address, I can send you my full list of what i've bought for my set up, it is pretty extensive - i have spent almost £3.5 including the car and interior :? It shouldnt cost you that much though!(m40 box not m42 though, so iirc you need to use half of the e36 prop for the m42 box, and i'm not sure about the gear linkages but they can always be fabricated if need be).

i am insured through broker king policy started on the 3rd august it took 2 weeks for the policy paperwork to come through and i keep getting stopped as for some reason its not showing up on the insurance database, not sure if other people have had issues with broker king but they are part of hyper performance as mentioned earlier in the thread

Dont just go through the comparison sites, try some of the smaller brokers and specialists. Some will come back with sky high quotes but you should get a few decent ones too

Best of luck with it
same here.
