You need the starter for the M20 too, Lee. - Sorry I wasn't more help today, wasn't prepped for getting filthy.

Didn't take you long to serve up the exhaust!
...or is it?

no probs mate, my pleasure, helping each other out, that's what it's all about.

Was funny pushing the scrap out onto the road (both of them), propshafts knocking all over the shop :)

The neighbours knew the area was going to the Dogs when the Soarer turned up.

If anyone wants a really nice 2.5 M50, I have one. :D

Got home after a weekend away and took a few bits off the M52, like the rocker cover & coils etc, ready for the new gasket, cams look mint. Took the sump off too. One of the bolts for the oil pickup near the oil pump is a right cnut to get to.

I assume I remove the windage tray which is bolted to the bottom of the block. Do the bolts that hold that on do anything else (do i bother putting them back in or not?)

Got to pick up the sump gasket and rocker gasket from the stealers and then I can get this sorted and plug the loom up. Then need to get the M20 flywheel, starter & clutch off Steve so i can get this lot back in the car.

Need to order a spigott bearing too.

Getting there

Mine fired first turn of the key with that loom I got off Dan, so should be bullseye mate 8)

Yeah the E34 sump has a windage tray, just wanted to know what to do with the bolts and if they served any purpose other than holding the windage tray on.

This week, the plan is

Fit sump (when I collect gasket)
Fit rocker (when I collect gasket)
Fit new plugs
Change over alternator
Collect M20 flywheel, clutch & starter & fit them
Bolt the box back on
Fit the S50 exhaust manifold
Fit the loom

Drop it back in :)

The bolts have to go back in Lee, there are triangular supports onto the crank caps that these hold down.

Cheers Dan, legend!

I thought they looked a bit too substantial for holding a bit of tin in place.

PM me your address so I can send the E36 loom over to you. I do use both lambdas on this don't i?

Well a bit more of the usual slow progress made today. We had company over yesterday so couldn't get anything done then and I didn't get started until about 1pm today.

Fitted the new cam cover gasket set and chucked in 6 new NGK's & refitted the coil packs etc.

The set about taking off the windage tray which attaches to the bottom of the block and removing the E36 oil pickup pipe, the only way I found I was able to do this was by removing the oil pump due to where one of the pickup pipe bolts is located. Went to fit the E34 sump and found that the windage tray in the sump fouls on the main bearing support brackets, so a quick phone call to Bob-S to check I wasn't going mad confirmed I needed to drill out the rivets in the sum holding the windage tray in.

This was a success, only I then spent a good half-hour cleaning all the swarf and metal filings out of the sump with white spirit and the airline.

Fitted the sump up with new gasket and plenty of blue Hylomar just for good measure.

Went to fit the M20 flywheel & clutch and found that some webbing needed removing from the end of the sump as it fouled the flywheel, so the angle grinder gave that the good news and I got the flywheel bolted up and loctite'd on, clutch on and centred up and bolted up.

Then fitted a new propshaft guibo and bolted the gearbox up.

Just got to bolt on the starter motor and then get the exhaust manifold fitted and the wiring loom and a few other bits and it'll be ready to dangle it over the engine bay again.

5 weeks until the pod :?

Been waiting for this mate. Nice work surely you could have fitted the s motor and loom it's only a few more mins. 5 week till pod is scary isn't it pick up wings and door pods and side skirts on Tuesday and drop bonnet and bumpers off. Waiting for prop and some other bits of a mate then we should be golden.

Got the starter motor bolted on tonight, put the front pulleys back on and also fitted up the S50 exhaust manifold, started plugging in the engine loom and need to fit the M50 inlet manifold. Quickly got confused by the wiring loom and guessing what plug went where lol.

Can't work out where the 2 lambda sensors plug in, Dan?

Lambda sensor plugs clip onto the top of the fuel rail, see here -

Image

Rear sensor cyl 4-6 uses the front plug and the front sensor cyl 1-3 uses the rear plug

I'll sort you at the pod fella, how do I know which sensor is which though as I've transferred them from the M52 manifold to the S50 manifold and obviously didn't pay any attention :)
