I have trashed the 6 speed gear box and i am changing it for a 5 speed box. I have fitted the 3.25 diff and got what i thought was the front part of an e36 328 prop which i was told would fit onto the rear part of the 325 prop but it doesn't.

So appart from an e30 m3 prop does anyone know what will fit ?
Maybe the complete 328 prop ?

You need to fit the E30 centre bearing to the E36 328i prop.. Then it bolts straight up....

sorry to hijack this but how does one remove the bearing??
I am not sure but think that my M3 prop is on the long side for my engine swap (centre bearing is at the end of the slot holes)
and though If I turn it round it would give more room.

@buster, sorry to hear about your gearbox problem.

Your M3 prop should be a straight fit Uwe! I am running the same.. You might need to adjust the length slightly by loosening the collar and then sliding it up the splines slightly

The centre bearing is held in place by a circlip and is fun to get off.. Ended up cutting Jai's off

I pushed it all the way in already. Just feels like there is some preload. My centre bearing was replaced not long ago and I wasn't able to remove it. I removed the circlip but didn't want to get too violent.

Some drop off, others need serious abuse, big hammer and big chisel usually work well :)

The E30 M3 prop looks identical to a 325i one, apart from having a larger guibo (lengths might be nominally different). If it has the U/J the other way around it'll be a 328i one..

Not quite, the U/J's are on opposite sides of the bearing....
Top prop is from my 325i, bottom one is an E30 M3 one (without the vibration damper thingy).

328i prop is similar to the E30 M3 but has a lumpy bit around here

hmmmm.....
I will have a look tomorrow but believe my M3 prop front section has the bearing and the U-joint. (like the above pictured prop)

EDIT,
just had a look and my prop has indeed the U-joint and the bearing on the FRONT section

If I get a 328 prop, does it matter whether it came from an auto or a manual?

Edit:
Forgot to add. I'm planning to use 5-speed M3 box with E30 M3 diff. These will mate with S50B30.

Thanks.

i have removed the prop off the s14 touring i was breaking, as i've sold the prop.
the rear part is an ordinary e30 rear section, and the front is marked up as an e46 320d !
i thought i'd post my findings here, as its an alternative for anyone thinking of a prop for the s50/5speed conversion
